These 6.9's are causing my W3J display to blank or the whole machine to reboot spontaneously whenever I change powerplay profiles.

Oh boy...I started getting Direct X memory errors (while in EQ2)after downloading 6.8s - don't know if it's connected, but the timing makes me suspect.

I may wait for more feedback before jumping on these.

Any reason why ATI woulnt' allow us Asus owners to downloaded like everyone else?

didnt install them yet but will do it very soon

    some information:
    Performance Improvement

As with most Catalyst® releases, performance has increased in various situations.

    * 3DMark2006 overall performance improves 6.7-23.7% with anti-aliasing enabled due to improvements in HyperZ efficiency on the Radeon® X1300, X1600 and X1800 series of products. The largest gains can be seen on Crossfire™ configurations and/or 256MB card configurations at resolutions of 1280x1024 or greater
    * Doom3 performances improves up to 9.3% due to further OpenGL shader complier and transform engine optimizations on the entire Radeon® X1000 Series of products. The largest gains can be seen on Radeon® X1900 configurations at resolutions of 1600x1200 or higher

can someone check the 3dmark06 scores. I personally have always used 3dmark05, and i was wondering if any1 noticed an increase in 3dmark06 score. i was personally worried when i heard mastha lost 200 points (in 3dmark05 im assuming).

Just in case anyone missed this the first time I posted it... jeez, who cares about 3dmark scores, I'm talking about potential stability and power issues

sabrewulf165, i suggest revert back to the previous drivers, but before hand you may want to see how well the new drivers do perform or if they provide some significant boost in performance.

If they don't, then your not losing anything when you switch back to the previous drivers.

Yeah, I already have. In my many years of PC experience, no driver update is going to provide a miracle performance boost unless it's fixing something that was broken (which none of my games currently are), so I'm not really worried about going back to 6.8. I just get frustrated sometimes hearing people talk about 200 points in 3dmark as if any of those 3dmark programs actually mean anything.

No one missed your post. The point was well taken and part of the reason I havent downloaded the 6.9s yet was because of your comment. However, my original intention was to verify ATI's claims of performance boosts. The easiest way to check is to run 3dmark test. I never said it was the only way or the best way, but it IS one way of measuring GPU performance. Your blanket statement, however, that 3dmark scores are meaningless is blatantly incorrect.

Also dont assume that every1 who asks about GPU performance is worried about games. Im glad to hear your games are running fine, but game performance doesnt automatically translate into 3D app performance. Right now what im hearing is that this is an unstable and underperforming driver release, but my last check would be the 3dmark06 scores that ATI claim to have improved.

I agree I overstated the matter... but ATI is usually pretty good about announcing app-specific performance improvements, so I just feel that a 200 point increase in 3dmark (which would be what, 5%?) won't necessarily translate into any other applications, as it has long been tradition for the big graphics vendors to optimize for 3dmark as much as possible.

I do appreciate your reasoned response, though, and I apologize for being so temperamental :(

no worries, im not upset and there were no problems caused :) If ATI is putting out buggy drivers, ATI is to blame. This is a forum for discussion and thats exaclty what were doing here. :)

I have an off the wall question. How did you get past the check to see if your card is compatible? Everytime I download other than with your link I get some file that says it is not compatible with my computer.

    Any comparison w/ 6.8s asenna?

Seems a definitive set of advantages...not ones that would necessarily coincide w/ my lappy anyway?

I got 3790 with Catalyst 6.8 and 3787 with 6.9, using 3dmark 05, so there is not much of a differance.

Actually, for me the catalyst 6.9 drivers helped stabilize my system when playing Oblivion. When I was using 6.8, Oblivion would sometimes freeze then I would get a black screen and an error saying the Oblivion has crashed. Well, I've been using the 6.9 for a couple of days and there's no more problem in Oblivion. So I guess at least for me, it's more stable.

On the heals of saberwolf ... the powerplay feature in Catalyst 6.9 has SERIOUS issues on my W3J. When enabled, my W3J reboots as soon as it gets to the welcome screen when booting every time. I resolved the issue by disabling powerplay but now i cant ramp down my GPU for mobile use... anyone else experienced this?

to be fair, i havent tested if this is also a problem in 6.7 or 6.8 but it DEFINITLY is in 6.9

if you go c://programs/ati/support, there should be a back up install file of the 6.8's. If you deleted it then.. that is bad.

With the 6.9's i feel that the performance on games have worsened. When i played halo before, there was no choppiness. Now it seems that there is. Ive played through this part, and there was no choppiness then. Args, maybe ill revert back to the 6.8's too.

gained improved performance with the 6.7-6.8 install, but 6.8 came with some bugs. So hopefully 6.9 fixed them cause I saw ZERO improvement from the 6.8-6.9 changover.

Guys, I don't know if any of you experienced this but while playing Oblivion using either catalyst 6.8 or 6.9 I got an error that said "ati2dvag driver stopped working normally" and my screen would go black and my resolution and colour 640 x 480 and 16 bit respectively.

I switched back to my asus drivers and haven't had that error since, although Oblivion is crashing here and there. (Oblivion, I've heard, does cause problems on most machines)

So I think sticking with factory drivers is more stable... in my opinion anyway.
