    Hey all,

I've got an ASUS F81Se and recently checked out my GPU temps using the latest GPU-Z. Running Furmark for 10 mins sends my temps skyrocketing to around 93-94C. I've read hundreds of posts in the last few days about GPU temps in notebooks and I've come to the conclusion that while damage will not be immediate with these temps they do pose a threat to the longevity of the graphics card and possibly other components.

While I am not a huge gamer, I do like to have a few 2-hour+ sessions of Mass Effect every week, so these temps aren't just a theoretical problem.

The airflow intakes on this particular laptop seem to be extremely small so I took it upon myself to conduct a test - see what my CPU+GPU temps would be with and without the main cover panel in place (the access panel for the GPU/CPU and RAM) after 6 mins of Furmark (plus idle temp for reference):

    with panel in place:
    CPU - 62C / 44C
    GPU - 92C / 61C

    without panel:
    CPU - 58C / 43C
    GPU - 72C / 51C

While having the panel off doesn't seem to help the CPU much, it seems that exposing the heat sink to greater airflow made a huge difference to my GPU temps - 20C less under load! Note that I was using a notebook cooling pad for this test.

So it seems that airflow over the heat sink seems to be a problem, and could be due to dust build up against the heat sink fan outflow grille, or possibly due to deficient air intake. The problem is that unlike many ASUS notebooks the GPU fan is not easy to remove on this model, it's contained within a larger case that I have no idea how to remove. I can't find any disassembly guides either.

    So my questions are:

    1. Does anyone know of a disassembly guide for the F81SE or other HD 4570 equipped ASUS notebook?
    2. Should I take my notebook to an ASUS Service Center to have the GPU fan area cleaned out and have the GPU heat sink contact checked out?
    3. Is anyone else with this ASUS notebook model experiencing temps this high?

That's it for now, my apologies for the long post. Perhaps I'll drill an array of small holes in the main access panel over the heat sink array for increased cooling in the meantime (I've been told this won't void the warranty and I can get a spare panel if I need to anyways). Some say this will change the airflow within the laptop but since the airflow seems to crappy at the moment I'm not really worried about changing it.

Thanks in advance for the feedback!

It's not running too hot. Thats about normal for a 4570. Look at the dell forums for their studio 1557/1558 temp reports on the 4570.

    ok,

I'll check out the Dell forums then, I know the studio 1555's came with the 4570 too.

    cheers,

    Wow,

Read over a few of the Dell threads and I guess I can stop complaining! Seems like they have some serious problems going on with the 1557. My system has been 100% stable and the GPU hasn't even down-clocked itself due to temps yet.

    Thanks for the tip
