I'm pretty please with my G51 so far.
But I'm wondering has anyone any ideas about doing any small modding around the optical drive noise

Maybe putting some rubber stoppers to insulate it more from the chassis ?
Or putting some sound insulating foam around it ?

Would this be a big job ?

Interested in any suggestions or if you've tried this on another laptop.

i did find that some disks product alot of vibration however most are fine. and easy way to reduce vibration is to release the screws on the drive slightly. that worked when i tried but ultimately i found vibration is caused by both the drive and media not the drive alone

It could just be because I like it so much, but maybe you should give duct tape a try. It's sticky and a little bit squishy, stays virtually forever, and you can use it with foam and the like. I wouldn't surround the whole thing in foam though, because that would just make a huge heat insulator. Rubber stoppers or feet would work best. I know on my old laptop I put two layers of duct tape on a certain spot on the faceplate and it significantly quieted the optical drive.
