Hello all,
I'm exploring the cost of putting together an Asus notebook. I want a portable (>7 lbs) decent general-use notebook (office apps, surfing, DVDs, music) with the ability to do some light programming/data analysis (MATLAB, C/C++,Python), and light (2D strategy) gaming. I want to see how much the price difference is between bargain notebooks (Averatec, Acer 290) and the semi-DIY systems. I'd like to spend a maximum of $1200 on this. Another user mentioned putting a system to together for $800, and getting decent performance out of a ~$1000 system would be fantastic.
I've looked at ASUS's site but cannot get a good hold of how the different M2N,3N,5N,6N models differ. The 6N seems the newest and has non-integrated gfx, but I'm not sure how the other 3 models differ, or what types of user they are aimed at.
Any advice on which would fit my needs best or what the most important differences between the models are?

Hey cripie,
The differences are quite alot and as they say the devil is in the details. The M2N and 3N are fairly similar with the M3 having a few more options than the M2. You should consider these if you are after a mobile solution. That is something that is something that has good performance is relatively light (2.5Kg) and has v.good battery life (7h)and a 14.1" screen.
The M5 is a thin and light sub-notebook. It comes in at around 1.5kg and has a smaller screen (12'1") and average battery life. Hopefully this will change when/if the higher capacity batterys become available for this model.
The M6 is a mobile workhorse. It comes with a 15.1 or 15.4" screen and has a dedicated GPU (ATI9600). It also has good battery life and weights just under 3Kg. If you plan on playing games on the road etc this is the notebook for you
Hope this helps a bit
