I'm trying to see if the models with the letter S mean they are superior in terms of Multimedia applications and sound quality, or are all the models equipped with better than average sound as far as built in speakers go on laptops?

No, 'S' has nothing to do with sound.
ASUS guys have different ideas about assigning numbers.

Definitely not for sound, my F8Sn has terrible audio quality out of the built in speakers. Headphones are fine however.

MTHall51 I suggest You to get known with this thread:
    Sound "skipping" problems with M50vm

Currently I own M70Vr and have problems with sound. Series M70 and M50 have the same sound card and speaker system.

    regards
    Michal

I think M50 series have better (or decent) sound speakers.
There are many posts in here about problems with sound but from other hand vast majority of owners is happy with M50 and has no knowledge about this NBR website.
Sometimes NBR reminds me a hospital full of patients and it makes an impression that the whole world filled with suffers and doomed

Very good observation. Every make and model I have researched, no matter how good the reviews, if I read about it here it does seem that if I read enough posts each item sounds like it could be bad news.
