Yesterday whilst on the net my monitor just went black on me as if my laptop had just switched off, but the power light and hdd lights were still on so it was just the monitor that's switched off or gone on standby.

After a bit of googling and reading here I've tried a few things as I've read them to try to work out my problem. I've disabled standbying in windows power options and uninstalled power4gear (which in 2 years I've never used). Tried rebooting, safemode, uninstalling/reinstalling monitor to no avail. But I can plug in an external monitor and that works fine.

Also when I bootup my laptop, for a second or two the lcd works and I can see the bios Intel splash but then it goes black again, then when windows its self loads the lcd works for another second or two before blacking out again. And I can put my laptop to sleep and then wake it, then it also works for a second or two before blacking out. And when I use Fn+F3 to switch between the lcd and monitor I can make it work for a second or two before blacking out.

Oh and something I just tried for the heck of it, if I close the lid and then open it slowly, once its about an inch open the lcd works again for just a second or two before going black.

What the hells going on? The being able to make it flick on was leading me to think software, but the lid thing is making me think hardware now and that's scary. A week before Christmas and only a few months after my warranty expired is a time to have my baby crapout.

Sounds hardware to me. You could possibly take it apart and see if the LCD cable is loose anywhere.

Took her all apart (which in itself took 2hours and a bloody finger), gave everything a good clean, wiggled all the cables and put it all back together.

Unfortunately it hasn't fixed it, BUT it has improved it. On bootup instead of the lcd just flashing on for a second or two it comes on for 10 seconds or so before going black again. Same with closing and opening to lid, I can close it then open it again and instead of just working for a split second it works for about 10 seconds before blacking out.

So obviously my fiddling has done something, but what? I couldn't see anything blatantly damaged but that's not saying anything really. Would this mean a cable or wire somewhere has snapped or worn out inside?

Okay here's something else I've just noticed, when I close and open it to make it do its intermittent working thing that its doing, I can hear a noise from inside almost like there's a small fly trapped inside. It sort of buzzes whilst it works then stops when it stops.

It sounds like something is damaged or worn, maybe what x3baddad described above.
