4. Being nice
5. Get the V1j to North America
6. Applying knowledge to those who aren't as knowledge in certain areas, but learning new knowledge in the process.(I need a thesaurus, whats another word for knowledge?)

Depending on what the prize is, I might just overrule y'all and give myself the MVP title and award. Even though this is my first post in the Asus forum in like, uhh, a few weeks.
Thanks for helping organize this cori, definitely some deserving people in these parts, such a great community. -
l haven't been on the Asus board in a while either...guess l could start helping out

Since I decide what's what with this MVP prize and what not.... till we start getting some decent turnout, the prizes aren't going to be able to go up.... We had 45 or 46 vote last month for a group of 10 nominees... I'm sure those are the active forum members, but it's not great for a promotion like this. Others have suggested very expensive things to get people interested, but really, it's not a random giveaway.... we're looking to reward those who give the most back to the forum with advice and just normal friendly chatter... they're not doing it for the money.. they're in it for the glory!
.... So, I'm not sure if the prizes would change the way things work in the forum, but I have another way of looking at it. Instead of bumping up the prize to increase the forum paticipation, the increase in participation will fuel more advertising dollars to pay for bigger prizes.....
... so that means that Andrew up there needs to get more people to the forum by having their marketing people spread news about this MVP program..... -

I'm sorry if this is a bit off topic, but I'm curious if this could be done for other parts of the site as well, not necessarily with a monetary reward or prize, just the little title under their name made different from others to signify the good job they've done around the forums..
Just a thought..
Good luck to all those who are participating, by the way. -

As for the lack of votes, often alot of us haven't been around to witness the positive impact of the nominees (me and like-me anyway). Smaller prizes? -
Ooh! Ooh! Pick me! Pick me! Oh, we're not doing the nominations yet?
I feel I have to apologise for not voting in the last poll, but I had only been here a week or two and didn't feel qualified to offer an opinion. After reading back through the last few weeks posts however, I believe MG deserved the win.
Oh Cori, a few more synonyms... wisdom, lore, skills, expertise, insight and know-how.
Wheel of Fortune, here I come! -
You're right Justin. If there aren't enough people involved in the voting and more nominees then it's just not really worth it to start up the award program.
The community will continue in its excellence, but if people start showing up just for the award, that's not good either.
My 3 cents. Yes 3.

I mean... given the number of nominees and those who voted.... I barely had enough to even consider the turn out to work in terms of averages..... After you get past a certain volume of votes, the turnout will set an average level and a winner would be clear cut...... MG won by what.... two votes? That could have changed in a second if a couple more people came to the forum.... so although I agree MG did a good job for the month, we nominated everyone because they did the top 10 best for the month... it's just that we were expected triple digit voting on at least 3-4 people based on the turnout to the forum everyday.
-
You should have it top 5 then not top 10. Maybe top 3.
-
PROPortable Company Representative
Well, maybe we will limit it this month, but even if you look at the top five from last month...... and you take the bottom five and spread their votes around, you wouldn't change much. However, due to the turn out, you're probably right and this month probably will end up with only 5 nominees. My initial plan was to have the mods, me and the previous winners select our top five and then put the names out there and from everyone's top five, agree on ten out of the say 25 selections. Everyone had at least 3 identical people because we can obviously all see who's doing what..... so the big problem wasn't getting those 3 because we all agreed on those... but it was then selecting 4-10 based on the what was left on everyones cards.. So if people were selected more than once, they got on there... and then I think the final two that we selected were based on a recommendation I had and one that one of the mods had...
So, just given the turnout, 5 is an easier to work with number.... -
i agree with lowering the number of selections. it makes it easier to vote because you would have less people to keep track of, so to speak. the reason i hesitated to vote last round was because there were just too many names (and also many many months of previous posting by those people that factored in psychologically).
i did end up voting, but fewer people would not only ease making a decision but it would also allow those that almost made the limited selection list to have a chance next month. with ten people each month, we'd have a lot of great posters out of the running next month (because you can't be selected two months in a row, right?). -

no no, im sure the nominees can be put up again, the winner, can't be put up again. hehe

you should keep doing it until you get enough prize money to buy your own w3j+merom+dx10 gpu notebook! -

LOL! did you know it would take close to 5 to 10 years of collecting 150$ gift certificate just before i can afford such a thing LOL.
By that time, there'll be soming like Core 10 Decatron, LOL!
I'm not doing it for the money or prizes, to me the glory and that golden yellow name is worth sooo much! It looks AMAZING! Couldn't Ask for anything else.
Thanks,

HAHA autograph.
Is there a possible way for the mods to "advertise" or make it be known to ALL about this award system?
Like a permanent message in each thread made, at the top or something, that says, "Don't forget to vote for your most valued member this month~!" or something?
Hrmm, this does present a problem though. It might turn into a competition and not an appreciation award.
Jeez, such a simple thing is not so simple after all.
Glad I'm not organizing it. HEHE.
I'll be glad to help you guys out, but I'm sure the mods and Justin can handle it just fine. -
If anything Andrew or Chaz can have a 'shout-out' in their weekly laptop news thread, so it appears on the front page
-

Sure, we can put in a blurb about that. PM me when you want it up.

Guys, I'm on this forum almost every single day more than once and I hadn't noticed this thread until now. I was thinking to myself, "Are they still going to run the MVP thing again this month", so I checked and there's already 3 pages sitting here worth of posts over an 11 day period. That has to say something. I look at the sticky's and even I couldn't tell this was something new...now I can see how people might have had trouble noticing the thread and voting last month. Something should really be done to make it more visable to others this month.
Also, No offense to Mystic, but can we change the colour of the winners name to something a little more visable, Gold is fine, but not in that shade, It's more like a punishment than a reward in my opinion..."You win, you're special, now to show our thanks we'll fade your name out and make it hard to see". Darken the gold and change the font size and style, that would make it stand out. You could also enlarge his Asus forum MVP designation, and design a special icon or graphic that gets passed along, like the immunity idol on survivor.
I agree on you guys narrowing it down to less than 10 choices this month, It'll make things easier on everyone. Thanks for taking the time to organize and run it again this month though...after last months poor results I wasn't sure If you'd keep it going. It makes the Asus forum unique!!! We all really appreciate it. -

Oh, by the way... since none of the moderators had the guts to say this, I might as well present the obvious.
.... The forum has sucked this month..... I mean, it's been pathetic on all accounts and I take some blame for that myself. The summer is here and there's a lot more for me to do outside and I'm on the road more..... there's less time to respond to every thread. On the flip side, I've seen another turnover in members (for the most part), since a lot of them bought W3j's 6 weeks ago.......... there are a lot of new members, asking questions which have been answered dozens of times and all the knowledgable consumers with the notebooks are simply not here..... I think we've all gotten so lazy that we're not even responding to people to tell them to search the forum because their question has been answered before....
On behalf of the moderators and PROPortable, we declare no one worthy of even being nominated to the monthly MVP contest, let alone winning it. SRD will remain the MVP for this month and no prize will be awarded.
Better luck in July... and please help contribute to the forum. -
Hah, I was gonna post this later in the day, but as Justin mentioned, this month hasn't really been interactive. Perhaps its because the W3j/A8jm has been released and all.
Ah well, how is that project W3j going along J? -

... we're going to work on some things that might make next month a little more interesting... so we'll see.

... it's sticky.. one of like 5.. how can people miss it?
-
I think that's part of the problem, people tend to skip the sticky and announcements since there are like 6 or 7 of them all the time up there. Maybe if it was reduced to just 1 or 2 at a time, people would take notice of them more.

Ok, well another month has passed and the forum hasn't gotten any better. None of the mods could suggest any nominees to me, so I don't feel that bad thinking the forum has lost something over the last two months....... We may need to accept that and lower our standards afterall. I know some of the longer term members have emails and pm's me asking if we were going to continue to run this program and I've told them as soon the forum starts becoming informative and helpful, instead of the melting pot for generic questions which don't spur much if any interest.
.... if anyone has suggestions for members who they feel have really helped them AND others, in both questions and comments that you feel have made them a good community member.... feel free to drop me a line. We're going to need some help. -

Well, from what i've seen that happened over the past 2 months, is that ASUS products are basicaly at the end of the seaon/generation. We are now receiving the last few ASUS Yonah Notebooks, and now almost everyone owns an ASUS laptop.
Now if you look at the Merom Wave 1 thread, its a purely speculation thread in which a lot of info, usefull and useless was thrown around, which shows some users will be interested in the Merom line, instead of the Yonah Line.
As for a possible MVP, i think Darrick deserves this one, he has consitently shown interest and provided a lot of info regarding the A8jm and even other models.
Good Job and keep up the good work.
I think we can expect an increase of volume in the ASUS forums when school is just about to begin...late august and early september, and this is also when we will have more info regarding Merom and there will be lots of questioned being asked from new and veterens regarding Merom vs Yonah and other factors.
Thanks,
MysticGolem -
Without naming names, I've seen, 2-3 people whom deserve a nomination, but besides that nothing else.
And I agree with MG, the previous months were because of the W3j, then the A8jm. Wait til the V1j eh -
MysticGolem Asus MVP + NBR Reviewer NBR Reviewer
unfortunately, the V1J may not be as kool as other models, most people already own the S96j, if they wanted high res then they already got the HEL80 and Z96j, and if they are waiting, then they gonna jump on the F3J.
The V1J timing of release is too late, plus we don't even know if it is coming to NA, also price will be most likely too high for many to buy.
One good thing about the V1J is that it is really desired by many, everyone wants to see it, use it, and very few will own.
There's always a want for more V1J pics if they are available
Thanks,
MysticGolem -
Why not have a "season MVP"? In all sports that I know, an MVP is awarded at the end of a season. Monthly MVPs have too short a timeframe and I think it devalues the award somewhat.
-
^I think the intent is to get top quality from a number of people every month...
-
A few months behind on eclecticdoode's comment, but thats a great idea, we may impliment it.
The contest is temporarily back up for now, since ASUS's Merom line will be active soon, thus, so will the forum. And hopefully, helpful activity as well. Of course, we expect people to leave and go back to their hush lives after their laptops are released and they purchased, received and are in love with it, but for now, welcome everyone!
BTW - It was never said, unless I missed it, what did MysticGolem and SRD use their prizes on? -
PROPortable Company Representative
Thanks for finding the thread for me again......
Anyway, with some time to think about it, I'm bringing the contest back. The nay sayers can ignore this, but it was initially proposed by me to help invoke community pride.... sort of like a charity softball tournment or bakesale.... something to motivate people to help others and ask for help when they need it. I'll get back to this in a couple days, but in the meantime, members should just remember the members who ask the good questions and return the favor with good help... at the end of the cycle you'll be able to vote for them (or perhaps you'll be voted for)... It'll be a bit different this time, but I don't want to ruin the surprise. When it's all said and done I'll post some more information. -

They did have that embarassingly bright yellow name tag for a while

I mean, I dont think anyone of us offer support for the purpose of winning the MVP. That's why i think just the colour indicator works the bestest. -
CalebSchmerge Woof NBR Reviewer
Hey Justin, with the high turnover rate, long time since the last MVP, and any possible changes, do you think you could refresh us on all the rules and tell everyone what the purpose of this is? I certianly think that is a very important part of the whole thing.
-
PROPortable Company Representative
Yeah, I'm working on that....... and taking it all into consideration.... there were certainly reasons we put it on hold and those need to be addressed. I'm considering making it very, very different, however the sense of community is really what' it's all about. If people don't understand or care about that, it's really going to be pathetic. The "prizes" shouldn't be the ultimate goal, yet if someone is participating for the wrong reasons, they'll judge that prize and weigh it against helping out the fourm.
I just wanted to put people on notice that the mods and I and hopefully the last winner or two will be paying a bit more attention and making notes over the course of the month or so. -
I think it's a great program/benefit to those that help to make this place the great resource that it is.
In a lot of ways, the rep system is in place to encourage helpful/positive responses. I'd be lying though if I said that the monetary prize isn't significant extra incentive. Being able to get something tangible (spare battery, RAM, savings on a new unit...etc) is huge, and it's a great extra benefit for those willing to come here and help others while also learning themselves. -
Ill have to start coming around the forum again to regain my former glory. noone can take my title away. Ok im kidding but things have changed alot around here since i stopped coming by. hows everyone doing

Where did i go the real world. Bussy with work. for a while it changed for worse part of the reason i left all the posts got pretty useless and repetitive. But things seem to be looking more interesting again. everything at one point is which machine should i get this or this. but this is a good forum so im glad its getting better.

Things changed for the worse..... Basically, no offense, but a lot of immature people started coming around May (like I said, no offense), but it seemed like after the big W3j release, a lot of the older members seemed to take off.
