Two days before my appellate brief was due (law school assignment), my asus a8f dies. Strange. It was working fine in the morning when I woke up. I shut it down to take to school... when I got to school, I press the power button...nothing.

slight panic sets in. could the worse actually happen? to me? still didn't work... kept pressing...and pressing...no luck. Called ASUS tech support... lost in translation... no help whatsoever. He kept refering to a reset hole in the bottom, but I can't seem to find it.

I also suspect that maybe it's the adapter (light pulsates when it's plugged into the laptop).. but alas...noone owns an Asus here (philadelphia) that I know... so I have to send it in... but they tell me it wont be ready for 2 weeks.

Moral of the story: Don't buy Asus. I'm going out right now to purchase a macbook to use in the meantime.

sorry to rant... oh I forgot... REAL MORAL OF THE STORY: BACKUP your DATA!

The reset hole is a small, pin-sized hole with a circle with two triangles on it. It is somewhere on the bottom of the laptop.
Try removing your battery and booting.
If all else fails, you can remove the drive and install it in an external firewire/usb enclosure and get to your data (assuming the drive isn't smoked).
I wouldn't totally trash an entire company based on one problem.
    Good luck.

Agreed, there were several ways you could have tried to recover your data. Like jmardy said, just remove the HD and put it in another laptop or enclosure. If it were that critical and the HD was still OK, you didn't do enough to try and recover it. Granted its not easy if you aren't familiar with computer hardware, a repair shop would have done it for you for a few bucks.

Computers crash/die/break all the time, no one manufacturer is perfect. Your macbook will fail too one day. Just back up your data on a regular basis. If you are working on a really critical document, its always a good idea to email it to yourself to have a copy accessible from anywhere.

On a slightly related note...I'm loving Google Documents for this very reason.

So don't buy an Asus but buy an Asus made MacBook?

so my logic if flawed, haha...

it's just frustrating because the only reason I went with an ASUS in the first place was because it had the best build quality I thought. But I had just sent the laptop in for physical wear a couple weeks ago (top lid was loose) and now this problem? A bit disappointing...

Thank you to all the above for the harddrive suggestion... I'm going to do that.

Having a USB or Firewire enclosure handy is a life saver at times. Good luck with your recovery.

I have saved many people with mine (funny enough, even law students). I am about to die on the hard drive in my computer, so it will be nice to have those around, as well as the spare drives.

unfortunately, you've been slightly misinformed. asus has good build quality with the w and v series. the a series is the worst in build quality of the asus series, and is similar to what you get with dell or hp.

    D'oh!

anyways.. I just bought a new macbook... now I just need an external harddrive... I think the A8f has a SATA drive right? And enclosures need to be compatible with that?
