im curious to see how the build quality is. Ive played with a V600vc so this is the same line, it should be just as good feel right?

Congratulations! I have been looking at this model for quite some time now and am still weighing my options and alternatives...It would really interesting to see what you think about this machine once you get your hands on it. Did you get a complete systems or just the barebone?

It's hard to compare the V6 series to a Z83 series, both are different in terms of build, design and materials. But that does not mean the Z83 is crap whatsoever!

ok i just got it setup, its running off ac power right now and took out the battery.

ummm first impression, i checked the keyboard for flex and it does flex but only if you press down on it with several fingers you can see it sink in. but is this with all notebooks? if i type normally i dont notice anything and it feels nice and solid, unlike toshibas that are super springy.

The keyboard feel is amazing, wow. Feels top quality.

The only thing is, like Coriolis mentioned on his, the edge wasnt clipped in completely - same with mine. i actually had to press mine down gently and it tightened up. the left side, about 1/3 of the left side, i can tell has a bit more flex than the rest of the keyboard.

And I swear, no way this is 17'' lcd...at least not viewable 17.

The quality doesnt seem as good as toshiba but maybe i have to tweak the x700.

    im still setting up.

oh and where the heck is the volume control?

Install the ATK0100 ACPI driver...then press FN + F5 (brightness down) or Fn+F6 for brightness up.

Fn + F11/F12 for volume control...

Nothing to panick about. Once you get all the drivers and stuff installed you will have it working correctly. as for the swearing its not a 17in screen have you ever seen one on a notebook because it does have one :)

thanks so much mate. i would have never been able to figure it out.

Im really digging the look of the unit altogether. wow, its not the sexiest, but its simplicist design makes it classy and elegant.

the speakers on the left and right of the keyboard is a nice touch, doesnt even look like speakers.

Ya no volume dial is kinda odd, and the brightness it worked. now i just have to tweak my ati card.

i was using a toshiba m60 prior to this model, and it wasa 17. maybe its just the thicker frame surrounding the lcd on the asus. i see the 17 now...

i think im just so used to seeing toshiba that takes a bit of time for my eyes to get used to the new brand.

im listening to it right now and the speakers, though some no name, sounds just as good if not better than the harmon kardons on the toshibas. holy they go loud!!!

i still need to find the ati software to tweak my video card settings.

I sure hope it has digital vibrance levels as nvidia does, thats what brings the screen to life.

hmmm... this is good comment, I'm comparing the Z83 with the W2 and W3 seriall, and it is because coriolis' review that got me thinking about the Z83 series, thank you for the great review btw, but the problem for me is I won't be seeing the laptop until I actually buy it, and I was going to get the barebone version, but now I'm gearing toward a complete factory built, with my own customizing off course.

ok i got the dvd working, guess the windows media centre is a bit picky as far as drivers go. I got the windows XP MCE edition.

ASUS software is not the best, but itll do.
