I have received two of the same model laptop, Asus n53sm-as51, and both of them have been troublesome. The first one I bought off Amazon turned out to be fine for the first day or so, then I started noticing it freezing up when browsing the web or pulling up applications like Windows Media Player. Using task manager was ineffective and trying to shut it down took over 30 minutes, so I had to do a hard-reset every time it crashed like this. Particularly this seemed to occur whenever I left the laptop on sleep-mode for awhile then came back on and heard the fan humming loudly (though it was relatively cool). Before this happened, I had updated the nvidia and intel drivers, went through windows updates, and uninstalled a lot of bloatware. I got my brother to look at it after getting frustrated with these issues and he checked the BIOS and ran a Windows partition, but these didn't clear the problem, so I decided to send it back- thinking there might be something wrong with the hard drive or RAM- and get a replacement.

The second one I have now isn't as bad as the first. I have updated all drivers, went through windows update, and removed bloatware. Within a few days though I have started to notice that when web browsing my laptop begins to freeze up again like it did the last. I can clear the issue with task manager luckily, but trying to use it again after it freezing only makes it worse.

If anyone else has any problems like this or has advice, please help me, I am getting desperate, thanks.

    *Edit*
Alternatively, if anyone has any suggestions for an Asus PC that is not over $900 but has similar specs, I might be interested. I'm considering the es72 if things continue to get worse, but would prefer something different. Also, any ideas why the as51 seems to have no reviews on Amazon?

"freeze up" mean not working or working slowly?

If it is working slowly, you need to check the website you visit. It is very possible those websites give you some back door cookies or spyware. You better check your MS config to see any unnecessary programs are running.

If you do not know how to do it, I recommend you to send it to an expert.

Seems to me that you may have a virus on your laptop. Do you know when this started happening. I had something similar happen to me and what I did luckily was restore my laptop to an earlier time and I was able to use the computer regularly.

There are newer model laptop at that price range with a 3rd gen processor which helps with heat and battery life.

Correct. Thanks for the info regarding spyware, and I am not exactly an expert, but I make sure to stay away from shady websites. Since I just got it, I don't feel this should be the problem, and I feel it should be protected with the Avast! system I downloaded. I've been having my brother, who knows a lot about this stuff (though I wouldn't necessarily call him an expert either), go through MS config to remove any unnecessary programs, review event viewer, configure Chrome and Avast! security settings, etc, and we suspect it is all the crapware that Asus has in the start-up. We've been doing this for some time, as we can't exactly locate the specific program; if things keep up this way though, we may have to re-install Windows 7, either that or get an expert to look at it, like you said.

If you need to reinstall windows 7 all you have to do is do a factory systems reset. All you have to do is restart your computer and keep pressing F9 until the screen pops up with windows 7. Avast is that something you downloaded for free or did you pay for the subscription?

Well, we did a Windows partition awhile ago, but it didn't resolve the issue. I am happy to say though that after reinstalling Windows 7 with a hard-copy activation code thing the problem is no longer problematic; my computer has actually been running fairly nicely for the past two days now that all the crapware is gone. Thank you for all the advice nonetheless.
