    Hello!

I have been using this website for the past 3 months. Recently I started reading this forum because, after long thinking, I came down to 3 manufacturers for my new laptop: Asus, HP, Toshiba.

I didn't know much about Asus Laptop, I just HEARD they were good.

well, after reading a bunch of threads I decided to buy an f3f.

now, I was wondering what should I do once I get it, should I format and reinstall windows, just to test the HD, because I got it from newegg and I have 30 days.

what about the battery. I will use mostly AC so I read I should keep it charged like 40%, but I don't really know if that applies for new batteries as well

I am also concerned about getting Vista, there is something on asus.com but I am not sure how it works.

Anyhow I think we should wait to get vista, because microsoft 1st releases of things always suck and are buggy.

    Sir Punk,

You shouldn't have to worry about your new laptop. Asus notebooks come with very little bloatware, so a reformat of the computer isn't necessary - however, you can do a reformat if it'll make you feel better.
As for the battery... it really is up to you. You don't have to leave it at 40% charge and then store it away... I honestly think people tend to baby their computers too much. A computer is a tool, and although it should be treated with care, you should use it how you can and not worry about its shelf life. Keep in mind batteries have a limited shelf life too... so even if you store it away, it will lose its charge.

The Vista Upgrade program just basically ensures you that you will get a discount on Vista when it comes out... that's pretty much all it is.

Yeah, just install all your preferred software & then defragment, that should be test enough for your HDD. Also consider converting to NTFS if the system comes formatted FAT32. If you don't know what I'm talking about, just leave it as it is :)

You might also want to repartition the HDD in the way you want it -- but again, if you dont't know the way you want it, then probably you want it as it is :)

About the battery. The 40% only applies to shelf-storage of LiIon batteries, you have no way of keeping it at 40% when it's in the notebook. It applies to new, and old batteries.

However, I find storing the battery on the shelf silly. That notebook's no longer working on the go - so then what's the point in getting a notebook? Don't worry about keeping it inside the notebook, at 100% charge 99% of the time, it won't hurt. Just make sure you do a full discharge every once in a while, at least once every few months. That will keep the battery in its parameters.

    Hope this helps.

yeah I know what you guys mean with fat32 and ntfs and partitioning.

I was an IT consultant and a CS grad student. but this is my first laptop.

I guess you are right about the battery, but then all those threads in this forum what are they for? pretty much I think that leaving it on a shelf doesn't help, and using it once in a while it's gonna be the best choice. I was just concerned if the battery heats up when the laptop is plugged in the AC. that's all.

the reason why I was gonna do a format is because I wanted to check if has any damaged clusters, bcoz I am not sure if a defrag will find that out, I use it so rarely :)

that Vista thing it's kinda of a rip-off, because we are the last wave buying computers with a XP, but I've heard my university will sell Vista for $10 for students...so..that shouldn't be a problem.

Well, I suppose it does heat up more than on the shelf, but if the laptop layout is correctly designed, there shouldn't be enough heat to damage the battery.

Instead do a: chkdsk c:/f/x/r and also on the other partition(s).
The /r flag will do a physical check on the HDD. Much more efficient than a reformat.

I'm not sure which threads you mean. Some batteries have issues, and some threads are dedicated to those issues. Some other threads, I expect, are due to "babying the notebook too much", as AuroraS said before. :) Or for asking questions, like this one.

I GOT IT! it's awesome, at least for now :)

it's fat32, there is a shortcut on the desktop to ntfs convert, should I? what are the pros and cons?

I have one dead pixel, which is in the bottom right, not too bad, hard to notice, besides that it's fine. and i don't think i have bluetooth

If it's a "stuck" pixel, you can send it in for a screen replacement within 30 days under the Zero Bright Dot Guarantee.

Enjoy your new laptop ! :)

    Cheers.

unfortunately is a dead pixel and i don't think is a stuck pixel, i have done some research and tests on it. i have actually 2 dead black pixels.

and the zero bright dot is only for W2, W1, V6, and M6.

i'm gonna call asus and see what they say.

do you guys agree that a converted fat32 to ntfs is always worse than a brand new ntfs. i read that on asus.com forum.

does anybody know what the recovery cd does? just reinstall windows?
