    Hello all,

As I said in the title, my G1 was running fine and then suddenly shut down. I couldn't turn it on. I kept pressing the power button with and without the ac power plugged in, but the outcome was always the same, no result. I don't really understand what happened, it is an almost new laptop, 4 months old. According to Asus, it's maybe the motherboard that died. I'm sending it to Asus to fix it. However, i'm lot disapointed, i never had such a bad experience with my other computers. It is my first experience with Asus and i'm not that happy with it.

It probably is a motherboard problem. Motherboard problems normally happen with in the first few weeks of purchase, and use. Its difficult to test every different part of a motherboard, so it may be the fault was never picked up in the quality testing stage.

It's either the motherboard or the ac input or some other power related item that broke.

Every manufacturer has a bad component once in a while. What you need to judge is the company's customer support when it happens to you. I had a Compaq mb go bad a month before the warranty expiration and they were great to work with.

    How is Asus support?

I had the exact same thing happen to me. I bought a G1 two weeks ago, and was very happy with it. No problems at all, then all of a sudden it shut down and now there's no sign of life from it! I got very attached to this laptop in the 14 days that I had it and was suprised and very disappointed that it just die on me. I really babied this thing. I took it back to Milestone PC and they are gonig to take it to ASUS to get it serviced. I'll have to see what happens next.

what were you doing when it shut down?

also, you might want to try removing the battery for a day and leaving it alone....then powering it up. it worked once for me in the past, but obviously isn't the solution to every problem.

So true. My laptop had some issues recently, but a quick reset and everything was back to normal. Not really sure why though... (like a CMOS reset I presume?)

Were you running on AC or Battery? I've heard people who run down on battery being unable to start up again. (You needed to take out the battery and plug in just the AC to reboot it).

I had this same experience with my a8js.

It powered down in the middle of something.

It wouldnt turn on it would only charge the battery.

I took the battery out and put in ac power. Then it started.
There is a fuse in the battery line that shuts off when the power is too low. The fuse will not reset until the battery is removed and its put on ac power.

    Try this

I tried evertyhing you mentionned just after it powered down. I tired the reset button twice, i tried to turn it on only with and without the battery. To sum up, i spent like one hour trying all sort of things. What i was doing before it shut down is pluggin my ipod. I noticed however that this usb port where i was trying to plug in the ipod is missing the little black thing on the pin. I don't know if this contact can create any sort of weird thing.

"I don't know if this contact can create any sort of weird thing" ... That's called short circuit!!!

It appears to me that you damaged the motherboard because the USB short circuit and burned something... Did you smell like smoke right after?

Good luck and let us know how the good ol ASUS treated you!

Yes I did try that. The ASUS Service Center e-mailed me with the same suggestion, but no luck. I've tried removing the battery and using just the AC cord, I've tried taking out the battery and using the reset switch on bottom, but nothing. There is no sign of life from it at all.

When it died at me I was in a Hotel and had connected the Hote's Ethernet cable for the first time (I had previously only used wireless internet) But the system booted up and detected the network no probem. When it died on me I was in the middle of going through the Bluetooth wizard trying to detect a bluetooth mouse I had bought. That's when it died. So it's possible that the Bluetooth module, or the Ethernet cable had something to do with it (I suspect that the motherboard is fried)

I've already droped it off for service so when I find out what happened to it I'll let you all know.

1- Well, even if it was a short circuit, i think that the motherboard is protected, it doesn't need to be changed, they only need to change the burned stuff that aims to protect if from any kind of short circuit.

2- I don't think also that my ipod delivers any sort of power to be able to short circuit the motherboard, it's not a 110 V but only a usb device.

3- When i had asus on the phone, they said they gonna change the motherboard if it died and that happened a lot to them recently for all kind of laptops, not only G1. They said that this happens during the first months of purchase.

I just got my G1 back from Milestone. ASUS replaced the motherboard. Not sure what happened to it but we'll see if I have any other problems.
