I turned on the laptop yesterday and Windows didn't come up. Instead, I got a cursor flashing on the top left. It was a sign that something was wrong... I turned off the computer (by using the power button), turned it back on, and everything worked fine.

This morning, I turned the computer on and immediately noticed the Asus game series logo had weird colors. Then the MS logo's colors were waving. Then I noticed my desktop background had bright red pixels all over the screen. I went into the display settings, but everything was fine: 32 bits, native resolution, etc. I tried a system restore to a week ago, but it didn't help. As I loaded IE, the screen started to flash, the colors distort and the background wave all over. I turned off all my peripherals and nearby electronics, even though no such thing had occurred in the past week... still the problem persists.

I'm out of ideas! I called Asus and they offered to replace the screen. I'm so sad!! This was supposed to be a rock solid system, and it's become a nightmare.

don't be sad. if asus is offering to replace the screen. it's unfortunate you got a dud, but this does happen. be happy that the manufacturer is not giving you the run around i.e. hp and it's keyboard problem with the 5000 and 8000 series.

That's too bad, but that's what the warranty is there for. It's certainly not common, but it sounds more like something happened to the video card and not the screen itself. I wouldn't go as far as to say the system has been a nightmare for you... anyone that seems to have even the most remote, odd thing happen to them - it automatically becomes a nightmare. It was your system and not someone else's, which sucks, but I don't think anything can get to nightmare status until you've had to replace the same part say 2-3 times in a given period of time.... or in the middle of the night the system terrorizes your dreams - and if it does, there are other issues there to deal with.

It honestly could be as simple as a loose cable to the gpu as well.

Really weird...almost seems like an overheated GPU. My desktop did stuff like that right before the video card died.

You've tried updating the video card drivers from Nvidia.com right?

Thanks for the words of encouragement. I consider this a nightmare because I spent months doing research on a laptop and Asus had the best feedback. I'm traveling soon, and if this happens abroad, I'll be screwed. I've had my share of real nightmares in the past with other brands... I'd rather not even think about them!

Asus sent me a case number by e-mail. I'm now waiting for the rma # and information on shipping. I wonder if they'll want everything in the box...

Thanks for your input... The problem comes up during the boot up sequence, so I don't think drivers for Windows would have an impact.

EDIT: I did look up the drivers a couple days ago, and the Go 7700 was not supported yet. (!)

Typically, notebook, battery, AC adapter, and proof of purchase. :)

    Good luck with your problem...

You know, everyone has been a huge fan of the 7700 while I've preferred the ATI cards. Now, I'm not saying I've seen a even a few of t he 7700's actually die, but I've seen and heard of more issues with the 7700's in the last few months than I have with any ATI combined over the years.

I shipped the G1 to Asus on the 23rd... Asus paid for overnight Fedex (ony after I asked for it), and they received it the following day.

Apparently it wasn't a simple LCD replacement, because I wrote them an e-mail today; and it's still under service. Bummer! :(

Well, a "simple" lcd replacement isn't as simply as you think really.... the lcd and motherboard both take a considerable amount of time to replace, however I know testing sometimes leads you to other issues and they like to get everything figured out instead of just replacing the lcd and finding out that wasn't the problem. If they give you the runaround, drop me an email.

My LCD has almost died too.
The screen appears to have shadows and flickers in same places and the colors look as if the resolution is 8Bit (16 color).
It is not a driver issue since even at POS and BIOs it shows like that.
I don't think it's a GPU issue since connecting an external monitor to either VGA or Digital port shows everything ok.

Have you ever got it fixed? Was it a LCD problem?

This is a real nightmare for me since I lieve in Angola and purchased it online while traveling to US. Now I have to get someone to take it back and try to have it repaired.
