So I bought a G1s first when it came out in 2007, but my sad story began 3 weeks ago..
Monday, October 6th, 2008
-My video card was getting way to hot for me to stand (idles at 75C), so I RMAed it hoping, and asked for a G1sn mainboard replacement.
-The service center told me the mainboards are coming next week so I left my G1s with them.
Friday, October 17th, 2008
-Called and found out that the mainboards have not yet arrived, and had to wait another week.
Monday, October 20th, 2008
-Went in to the service center, and was told that they didn't any replacement boards instock, but after my complaining, he said he would check the back.
-Later he came and told me that there was 1 and the back and told me to come back and pick it up in 4 hours.
-Came back in 4 hours and picked it up, they replaced it with a G1s board with an 8600M GT GDDR3 instead of a G1sn board with a 9500M GS. I didn't mind, thinking that they added more thermal paste to the notebook.
October 23rd, 2008
-G1s GPU failed, I put it to sleep in the morning, and came back to find out that it wouldn't turn on.
-Tried turning it back on, but can only hear the "BOOM" boot sound but no images.
-Yes I have tried to reset button
October 24th, 2008, Morning
-Brought in my G1s, complained some more and they promised that they'll have a shipment of the G1sn mainboards in next week, and I will definitely get one in my notebook.
-They also had me sign a contract where they lent me a F3f for temporary use until my G1s was fixed
October 24th, 2008, Afternoon
-To my suprise they called me and told me that the mainboards actually arrived a few minutes after I had left the repair shop, and they had finish puting one into my notebook and I could come and pick it up anytime.
-I got there as soon as possible, tested it for a minute or two and worked fine.
-Brought it home turned it on for 5 minutes and the screen became messed up, which I know is the graphics card failure again because I had an external mon connected at the time the screen went flashy.
So..what do you guys think I should do now? My notebook is under warranty until Fall of 2009, but I really don't want this repair process to go on indefinitelyI know alot of you have been through the same situations as me, can you guys give me some advice on what I should do? The earliest time I can contact them again is next monday since they are closed on saturday and sundays

By the way, this post isn't made to complain about their technicians, they have been really nice and have seemed to have done alot to help.

EDIT: OOoOo, you're talking about the markham branch? that's the one i use since i moved to north york from jamaica (the island), they were really good with fixing my laptop g1s, when it broke, they replaced the hard drive, motherboard and the screen.
they are really nice, you should explain that you really just want a replacement laptop now. -
I think it's standard procedure for Asus to try and repair your laptop 3 times before give you a replacement laptop. I would give Asus one more try before demanding a similar laptop replacement (maybe the M50?).
-
I doubt they'll give me a G1sn because the CPU is different :S
Yeah there's only one branch in Canada, the one at Highway 7 and Woodbine, I know they're really nice, but will they be nice enough to give me a G1sn?I don't know if I'm asking for too much, the thing is, I paid 2.2k for the laptop, which is more then the MSRP for the G50v, but as we know, products depreciate
-
Sadly if you ask for a replacement G1S, they will tell you they can't give you another G1S since they stopped making them, including the G1Sn (They may have the boards, but not the full systems).
So basically if you ask for a replacement they should offer you a G50. I had to replace my G1S after 6 RMAs and so far am happy with the G50, except for small bugs here and there (if only the OLED would work!).
If you really want to keep the G1S, try another GPU replacement, but ask them to be very thorough when testing to make sure the GPU actually works this time.
If you go for the replacement route, you should be in line for notebook replacement after 3 RMAs (I wish I had found that out sooner -.-).
However, don't ask the guys in Markham, they'll just tell you to call customer support, so you're better off doing that first, have a number set up and wait for your replacement to arrive, rather than wasting trips there. -
I wouldn't mind taking the G50 since it is one of the better 15" competitors..
When you called Asus, which department did you speak to? I think I might have to prepare for it, especially seeing how unstable it has beenalso, did you happen to receive warranty with the G50 as well? or is that one of the drawbacks of taking the G50?
-
Yeah I was floored when they offered me the G50.
When I called Asus I spoke to customer support in order to get the replacement. After telling them my serial number, they saw the amount of RMAs and the rep said she would speak to her manager about the case and would call me the following day. Got the call the following day, they said I was approved, but would not get a G1S since they are out, got the g50 since it is closest to value I suppose.
I believe I have a fresh 2 year warrenty on the G50, considering that is what is listed on the Asus repair/RMA paper they attached to the box. However, I am not sure how I am suppose to apply for the accidental warranty since I don't have a bill
I plan on calling them tomorrow to find out how to get he accidental warranty and to get official confirmation on the g50, but it looks like I have a new warranty.
What I did find odd was that after I ran the whole Vista set up, someone else had partitioned the HD and had files for WoW (which atm I feel I should've kept -.-) on it. I'm guessing I got someone's return? However, I have not noticed any defects or problems with the laptop. I'm guessing someone bought or received it, didn't like it for whatever matter and returned it, and I got it, which is fine by me as long as I don't have to RMA it.
Also, if you do receive a replacement, Asus will want back everything that came back with your G1S, manuals, mouse, AC cord, etc. Just don't give them the bag, I gave them mine back, and didn't get one back! I don't too care since I never used it, it was still in the plastic since I found it pretty ugly. -
The thing right now is, we have all paid so much for the notebook, and have wasted a decent amount of time trying to get it repaired they should just offer us the replacement without a manager's approval. Like I posted in my first post, we had to pay 2.2k for it when it came out and the G50v's MSRP is around 1600-1800, let alone one that was returned/refurbrished/RMAed back to ASUS..
But..I still have hope for them..hopefully my third RMA will go well, if not, I'll ask them for a replacement, or pay the difference to get a G70..I'll give you guys an update on the situation after I get back on Monday, mostlikely I'll be up there for most of the day..
Thanks for the advice guys! I knew I could count on you all -
i have a question, is there anyway for them to tell if you have overclocked your gpu (as i have) if the computer isn't working/fried?
-
The 8600GT's are made to overclock, I dont think theyll make a problem of that if you did that, IF they would be able to "see" it in the first place
-
I didn't even have time to oc my G1s after I got it back, havent even got a chance to download RivaTuner -
sigh, it's just because now i am noticing artifacting at lower clocks that i have seen before, stock is nice and all, but overclocking really makes the games work well.
-
So, I sent it back again this morning, he said that he'll do some tests on the mobo and will call Asus to see what kind of replacement I would get if I want a replacement. But I might have to pay a difference if I want to take the replacement :S I'll be pretty pissed if they say the difference $500 or over..but they've been pretty nice to me so I don't think they're that evil
Anyways wish me luckand I hope, Singh31, you get your OLED fixed
-
Haha thanks, I hope I can find a solution, I hate missing msn messages.
I doubt you'll have to pay any sort of difference if the laptop is deemed defective as in that case it would be their fault, not yours.
Also in terms of OCing, Asus advises against it, but I don't believe it voids your warranty or anything like that. -
Alright this will be my final (hopefully) update to this thread, they have agreed to replace my G1s with a G50v at no extra charge
but they said that my warranty will be the same one I had with the G1s meaning that it'll end near the end of next year :S owell
Thanks again to everyone for the adviceand thanks to Asus (Markham service location) for helping me through everything xD
-
lucky man! I wan a G50 too so lets hopen that this thing goes to waste...
or not, the G1S is decent, i like it -
