    Hi all

 to begin .. i bought it back in November ... and it has been stolen last Thursday 19/3
i was in uni and for the first time i decided to use the locker (an electronic one), and I left the back bag inside it.
the bag has the laptop with GTA IV cd1 inside, a 9 cell battery, a sound card, razer mouse, and some uni stuff.
came back after an hour and the locker didn't accept my pin number!.. i called the security to open it and there was nothing inside

I know it's kinda silly to leave over 3500 AUD in a locker, but it still should be a secure place

so, next time if you need to use an electronic locker, think again and look around for people trying to get your pin no.

anyway, it was a great machine and i hope this doesn't happen to any of you

hmmm.... very sorry to hear that, that's certainly not good!

One thing - you may already know, but frequently laptops are covered by your homeowner's insurance policy. You (or your parents, if you're a little younger) could report the theft, and get a new computer. You'd still be out for the cost of the deductible (which, in my case, is $500; not sure what it'd be for you) but it's better than nothing.

Of course, this also depends on your insurance - you'd have to check.

Again, sorry to hear it - hope it works out!

You might want to spend a few minutes recollecting what passwords and data you might have stored on the laptop. Change passwords to all that stuff NOW, and if you had very personal information on the laptop (e.g. SSN equivalent) then you really want to put a credit watch on your account with the big three credit agencies assuming they operate in CDN.

Maybe if you're lucky enough, you can still find the culprit (dumb enough) to still be using the laptop and catch him red handed, if you can somehow identify your laptop someway. It's a thought anyway.

I'm sorry to hear the unfortunate news. As Greg mentioned, I'd change all the passwords that you may have kept on your laptop. I would also keep an eye on your ebay, craigslist and other local listings just in case the perpetrator decides to sell it.

Agree with Greg and David, at this point you should worry as much about your data and personal sensitive information that may be used to nefarious purposes, as about the physical machine. Example: passwords and credit card numbers stored by the auto-form filler in Firefox or other browsers.

Though the good news is this is most likely some opportunist thief who will just wipe the HDD before using the computer. Such people don't usually care about your data. But do take precautions!

Would you by chance have networked the computer with a VPN or Hamachi or LogMeIn? You might still be able to track it then, maybe report it to police who might be able to recover it.

This is pretty smart David sometimes people worry too much and forget to check if anyone in the area/community is selling it.

Good luck to you bud i wish you the best!

Oh boy that's horrible. I know that I'd literally be crying if my laptop was stolen.

Anyone else, install Adeona. It's basically a free version of LoJack. It won't keep your laptop from being stolen, but you might be able to get it back. It constantly sends information about the IP address that the laptop is connected to, to their servers. If it gets stolen, and the thief is dumb enough to go on the internet with the computer, then the information about where it is will be sent to the servers. Then you can get on the internet and retrieve the information from the server.

Thank you all for the for the support and help

there are no important or sensitive information, not even passwords other than emails and few websites and i have changed them all in few hours after it was stolen
and i have a backup of about 85% of the files .... things i lost are like 200+ photos from my camera and saved game files :p

    jeffreyac
unfortunately, i live with friends and we don't have insurance on the house.

    markhedder
i have been looking around all the time whenever i'm in uni or around and found nothing yet

    David
i didn't thought about it before .... just checked ebay and few other websites and found nothing , but i'll check them regularly.

    skynet1988
there are no CCTV cameras near the locker .. i told the security about the other cameras around and they said only the police will have access to them
the police report will be ready this Monday and then the security could contact the police and will see what will happen

    Greg
i haven't used any of these programs but i have another idea, the MAC address ... this seems harder since i didn't use the mac filter in my router. i couldn't find anything in the Logs of the router ..

Thanks again and i'll post any good news here

    Dude that sucks!

Asus has a 1 year theft, fire and damage warranty that came with my G50Vt-A1 so maybe you can get yours covered under that?

A similar situation happened at my school where someone's EEE got stolen (although it was from a table), If you had a wireless setting to autoconnect, and they were stupid enough not to format it.. you may be able to talk to your ITS (internet techs) or security to track the IP of your login or anything, hope that you get your justice man

    Sorry to hear!.

If you find out who did it, let me know, mr lead pipe wants to meet who evers legs who stole it. lol. , there should be laptop insurance.
