My W3J bit the dust this evening!

I’ve had problems with random reboots since purchasing it new last August, but today the blue screens reached the point where I can no longer reboot. I can’t even reinstall XP from the recovery discs.

Every stick of RAM I placed in the machine tested bad, so I doubt the OEM ram plus the two other sticks are bad. BSODs kept on saying a physical dump of memory. Does anyone have a good contact at ASUS? The guy I spoke with said to email him my info for an RMA #. This really blows so badly, as I’ve got an integrated medical exam next Friday and all the lecture are on my notebook!

Ideas? What’s the turn around time from ASUS? Oh and yes, it’s just out of warranty….Sweet

Could yank the hard drive and throw it in a case if you want you notes off it.

Yep. Use a USB enclosure like for instance the VanTec Nexstar. you can get your data for the exam, and send the notebook in RMA.

If all the RAM tests bad, it sounds like a motherboard issue.

If you're in the states Im sure you'll experience a good RMA. When I sent mine for a broken speaker, they provided me with a Fed Ex account for free overnite delivery and i got it back in about 4 days.

Good luck, hopefully its not something that can't be fixed.

What can't be fixed? Can't everything be replaced?

I think he means if your system was beyond repair. Meaning there was too much wrong with it for them to fix.

    Yes, it can.

So it will probably be fixed.

Edit to make it clear: as long as it's under warranty it should be fixed and will be fixed, even if it means completely exchanging the laptop. They will keep it there and keep changing parts until the laptop works properly.

The only danger is having an entire line of products faulty (like the V6J batteries, for instance) but I know of no such thing for the W3J. So all is fine, don't worry.

I dont know what you are using to test he ram but memtest is fairly relaible even when outdated. The only other reason your ram can fail is if the system is overheating and that is pretty rare. i would trust what the memtest is saying. Try memtest if that is not what you are using http://www.memtest.org/

three bad sticks? They test fine on a buddy's machine... Yea I know it's weird... The most reboots occured when I slapped in a new 2gb stick from newegg last week.

you should account for the fact they all 3 can be incompatible. granted w3j was not a very picky notebook but it is very possible. try the modules in both ports. if they are all bad assume that either they are bad or simply incompatible. use memtest. it is a relaible utility
