    W3v detects the external monitor.
The monitor detects the VGA signal coming from W3v.
But the display is just pitch black.

It usually works (displays extended desktop) when I reboot, but not always.
The display goes pitch black at random times for a random period of time.

I recently started to use the VGA output.
I'm hoping that this isn't a hardware problem...

    Did anyone have same problem?

It should always work, at least until your OS starts, if you boot up with your monitor connected to the VGA port. If it stops working when your OS starts, then it is probably a driver issue. If it does not work from boot, it may be a hardware issue.

Is it a CRT or LCD?

Which Catalyst are you using? Also double check in the setting if anything has changed. In the Control center, click on "Detect" just to see if it will detect it again.

Then unplugg the monitor from the VGA port, click detect, then plug it back in and then hit detect.

Try that, and let us know how things go.

Try lowering your resolution if its a CRT. Also try updating the display drivers

It doesn't work on boot up before the OS starts.

    LCD

I'm using the driver that came with the laptop.
    Driver version: 6.14.10.6517.
I've tried Catalyst 6.2 and 6.11 with modtool, but no luck.

When I unplug the VGA cable, the monitor says "No VGA Cable" then it goes into sleep mode.
When I plug it back in, the monitor wakes up and I just see the black screen. The monitor is on but the screen is black.

I think what the monitor driver is up to date.

I guess it's a hardware issue then, right?
Where and how can I have my laptop examined?
Is there a place that I can just walk in and have this looked at?
I live in Santa Monica, CA.

I've had this laptop for 14 months and I think I only have 1 year global warranty. (Purchased from Newegg.)

Thanks for your suggestions and thanks in advance for more help.

I just found out that S-Video is working when VGA does not.
    Hmm...

You can't do both at the same time... the video source will only allow output through one medium other than that to the systems own lcd...

    Of course.
I was just trying to say other external video source like s-video is working. So, I guess it could just be a faulty VGA wiring and not a problem of the graphics card with "external video source" as a whole.

Anyways, any place I could walk in and have this looked at?
