my asus g50vt x1 that i got from bestbuy a little less than a year ago all of a sudden shut off last night and i couldn't turn it back on. I'm pretty sure it got fried because i was trying to plug my headphones into the headphone jack and accidentally touched inside the USB port (it was dark) and it immediately shut off.

i bought the 2 year warranty on it, but i was wondering if i will be able to salvage my data (and how) and does anyone know best buys policy on warranties? will i get a replacement or store credit? because i was looking at the gateway P-7915u FX http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Gateway...logy/9605365.p?id=1218130485627&skuId=9605365 and if they had that in stock i'd almost rather have that.

    Thanks for your help!

remove ac adapter, remove battery and hold the pwr button for 30sec to a minute. also check to see if there is a reset button somewhere. give it a try.

There's a reset button at the bottom of the machine, you'll need a paperclip. That is really weird though that it just crapped out on you like that.

Assuming your hard drives were not shocked electrically, you should be able to just put them into a SATA enclosure and read your data off of them normally.

I did this once on my previous laptop, but it was okay afterwards, you probably shorted the power from the USB cable.

Try all the above stuff, hopefully it will all be okay :)
