I just bought a Asus N51Vn-A1. A couple of days of using it I decided to test out the dvd drive but it is not working. Vista recognizes it in My Computers, and there are no driver updates either. I also tried uninstalling and installing from the device manager, but that also does not work. Usually when I put in any type of dvd, I can hear it spin for a few seconds than it just stops. And when I try to double click the drive from My Computers, it just automatically ejects.

EDIT: I put in the Asus recovery disk to see if I could boot directly from the DVD drive, and it can. It took me right to the setup(I exited immediately, which I hope is far enough enough to test my dvd drive reading capabilites) , so I would assume that this drive can read and that it probably is not a hardware problem.

EDIT 2: Virtual drives don't work either, they have the same problems as my physical drive.

Take it back to wherever you bought it and ask for a refund or an exchange

oddly enough I had the exact same thing happen with a friend. Sadly, it was a long time ago so i dont remember exactly how to fix it but maybe i can help. I remember searching for drivers for the specific drive via google, and eventually came to the microsoft website. There was a tool called "fix it" or something. I dl'd it, ran it, and the drive was instantly fixed. ill try to find a link

edit: Try this. Its not the exact tool i used before, but i was also fixing this problem on an XP machine and it looks like they may have built this feature in or something

I'm very afraid of that. I start school in a couple of days, and I bought this laptop online.

Try removing the drive from device manager (maybe in safe mode) then rebooting. That should reinstall the drivers.

Did you have maybe Apple software installed (iTunes?) If so they add some so-called filters that can mess up the optical drive. Google should help with a solution in that case.

There's always the brute force approach of recovering Windows to factory defaults. (which may not work if the original drivers are faulty)

I did not have any apple software installed. Anyways, I gave up and restored it to factory defaults. And everything is working again, so I'm happy.
