As some of you may (seems most do not) care about the S/PDIF not working in the G71 issue, I feel that as a consumer it is right, and my duty to bring it to attention. My last post was closed (apparently because I used inncorect wording in it's title) you are all entitled to your opnion but in my post It was proven, that I, (even though I was stating fact) was not. So I will reitierrate my viewpoint.
1. The g71 notebook from best buy has an advertised S/PDIF but it dose not function, if you are in need of a non hdmi surround sound solution you will not find it in this model. (I have spoke with asus tech support and they have confirmed this problem) nor do they intend to fix it.
2.As far as I can tell this problem is not only a hardware issue but a software issue via/vista 64 but in my research there are many notebooks that do function with S/PDIF and vista64.
After being berated and insulted by fellow forum members it seems to me that none of you care that a multibillon dollar company is selling defective products (why you would not care about the" principle" of this I do not know)
even if the issue dose not effect you "the principle should" -an example-
If you purchased a new car and the sticker said Ipod comptibal, and you found after the purchase that the stereo functioned (the radio works the cd player and such) and yes the car dose drive, you contact the dealer and say hey you told me this thing works with ipod, it says it on the commercial as well, and it dosen't, and the dealers response was well its supposed to, but since you allready bought it to bad, then you see somone walk up on the lot, and there looking at the same car and you lean over and say, just want you to know I just bought one of these and the Ipod feature dosent work. The majority of "considerate" human beings would say thanks for telling, and possibly respond with, "I dont have an Ipod" or "I don't need that feature" (as some forum members did), or mabey even, "really that sucks why dose it say it dose when it dosent" (but we wouldent want an educated consumer like that last guy right). But those would not be some of the people I spoke with last night. If Some of "those" people on "this forum" where in the lot, there response would be, shut up man I don't care about your experience, or ,why would I give a crap about that Ill just waste some more money on replaceing it, or even ,f u man dont tell me that somthing I like isn't perfect.
Some of the people here are rude, condencending and selfish and there comments speak for them, I was trying to help and I was told I was trying to
harm, I was stating facts and was told I was a liar. I tried to defend my statements and told I was out of line for doing so, and then I was silenced.
Since none of you seem to care about what I say (being not a single one of you said "hey man thanks for the heads up" or that sucks I wonder if I/we/they can figure out a way to fix it) it seems that I won't bother telling you the other problems my g71 has (I am tired of defending my self) I hope that some of you in the future will have the integrity to treat others as you would like to be treated, but as far as I am concerned ,I will not share any of my problems with this notebook or any future notebook with anyone here (because god forbid the mighty asus or some other massive company might be selling defective items, or lose a single sale do to a whistleblower such as my self).

hey man thanks for the heads up.

you got to calm down. you are not the only one who gets upset.

ok ...1st of no one did tell you to S U ,if there are any go complain to the mod team but not here , but the title of your last post was just so rude already that telling ppl not to buy the G71 because of the spdif doesn't work instead of something like "before you buy the G71 , please read this " also I did suggest you trying something see if it works , but i don't know if you tried it yet. So let's just drop this topic and start to work see how to fix it .
I wonder if it's not a software thing because if the same chipset is/was used in a lot of other lappys , why would the driver won't work? Can you give out what sound chip is the G71 using ?
My other post :
Now I don't understand ...if there is a sound card ( which is onboard ..and normal spdif is combine with headset jack out , so which means that the spdif chip is there right ? ) ....hmmmm you using vista right ? try un-install the sound card driver and don't re-install it ( un-install it completely remember check the mark to remove the driver from windows ) because when I did fresh install on my W90 (although it's a ICH9 ) Vista automatically regconize it as spdif (I see the red lights came out from the phone jack) . But after install the driver from the Driver Disc , the light is gone I guess that is realtek 's problem.
Just for your work I would suggest you to go take a look at those lanboxes (you know the little cube looking type of desktop chassis ) I had one , TT Lanbox Lite , at the time I can fit a full ATX power supply , a Micro ATX motherboard, 2 HDDs, 1 ODD, and a Full length Video Card ( that time I tried both Ati 2900 Pro and Geforce 8800 Ultra which both of them are really big / long cards ), and still have 2 PCI slots open with 4 slots of ram and decent cooling. -
To be honest, you sound like you're 13. People that first bought these had to deal with the premature underclocking - a MUCH bigger problem than the almost useless spdif feature - and they didnt start a thread bashing the product nor become post wh*res.
Not to mention this is one of the most polite forums out there. Try car forums. Go to a civic forum and tell them not to buy civics because of something almost no one uses and see what happens. -

thanks for your response it's the latest realtek driver ver2.29 6.0.1.5898 alc633 as i recall I installed the latest update on the 23 -

Thanks for the post Clegg and saincteye. Since this is most likely a driver problem, hopefully realtek stops being retarded and fixes this. -
^ I labeled it as ALMOST useless as in most people wont have a use for it since the hdmi is more convenient (if using a tv). This is considering how many people have owned it for a good while and no one has noticed this....
If you trash something that someone just spent a lot of money on and love, they arent likely to help you. If your thread title had been different, you would have received completely different responses.
If you havent tried an older driver, try that. When testing the new one, it is likely they did not check to make sure this feature still works since it is so uncommonly used. -

But yeah, I agree that Clegg could have been less dramatic... -

Always an option...take a look. -
It wasn't what you were saying that people were taking issue with, it was the fact that you were exploding over an issue that many people would not necessarily consider a dealbreaker, and taking attitude to people who expressed their opinions.
Similarly, your thread "No SPDIF Function in Asus Notebooks" is misleading upon first glance, and gives a fair impression of brand-hate.
Posting a thread about a closed thread to continue the arguing is also probably not a good idea.
If a new user signs up and instantly starts raging about something, especially a brand that a lot of people have had excellent experiences with, then he doesn't have a lot of credibility, and would probably be better off taking a more passive attitude until he's gotten a feel for the forum and the tone of the majority of its discussion. -
Calling me a troll and telling my that a false spec is my opnion (and apperntly a useless one at that) is a great way to welcome someone to your forum -

thanks for the suggestion I have allready purchased a external (i had issues in the past getting the x-fi to work with some of my stage production software) so i picked up one of these instead http://www.focusrite.com/products/saffire/saffire_le/
the sound quality on these blows away the x-fi but as you can see you pay the price -
I was trying to explain that SPDIF is actually a very important feature and you seem to be the only one who grasped the concept of that (If you where here I would would buy you a beer). -
Thanks for your support I commend you for understanding the issue it makes the time I have put in here worth it if even just one person (such as yourself) gets it -

Reads like a whole lot of hurt feelings and a lesson not learned.
Not sure what "rights" you have in Neverland, but your "rights" on a privately owned message board are nearly nil. -
@ Nothing is Real's comment on tv speakers, any company that makes a hdtv with no digital output is retarded, and ive never heard such a thing. its the best way to have your 360, ps3, bluray, laptop - whatever you have - all giving digital audio to your home theater, as most only have 1 or 2 digital inputs.
also, it doesnt say anywhere on best buy's site that the rx05 has spdif. and i havent been able to find it on asus's site, just the A1 which IS different. -
ohh and a tv without a digital output is retarded yet a laptop without one is not I should have to plug my laptop into my tv and then plug my tv into my stereo so I can hear surround sound out of my gaming laptop -
Your correct I don't have the right to tolerate being insulted -

Look at it this way. If you get a usb sound card with spdif then its one less port you constantly have to plug/unplug. Thats if you have a usb hub, if not get one because they are extremely cheap. Hell, I bought one last year because i wasnt bringing my tv and its more convenient. Its about $20 shipped for a good one on newegg so its not a big deal and more practical. -
And many receivers actually have hdmi inputs these days. -
-
If you really need SPDIF output you can buy a Turtle Beach Audio Audio Advantage Micro USB Sound Card ($25~30).
I think this might be the cheapest way to get SPDIF without buying a new notebook. -

Clegg, as a new member with very few posts, most for the purpose of arguing with other members over the one topic, I think it's perfectly reasonable for people to wonder whether you're trolling.
I hope I'm not overstepping my place here, but while constructive advice and criticisms are well received and useful, coming onto a forum full of rage and entitlement is usually a good way to get banned/flamed/whatever.
If you really want to be part of an online community, try to look around and find out the tone in which most posts are made before barging in guns blazing.
"I'm disappointed in my G71 not having an advertised function, anyone specifically wanting that function might want to reconsider"
is fair enough, but
"ASUS sucks they screwed me out of my built-in spdif blarking farkle raeg!"
just doesn't endear you to people. If you want to keep posting like that, deal with the responses - they're not gonna change.
My experince with the G71 S/PDIF and forum members responses
