Hello,
I just bought a W7J 1,66 Duo.
Now I noticed a few things that make me doubt if my purchase was a wise one.
I bought the notebook from a dealer in a computer mall in HongKong.
Here are the things that are strange:
If I press on the screen with my index finger ( moderately hard) while having a black background (xp screensaver) a white rather big fog like stain appears on a random position on the screen. This round or oval spot then vanishes within a few seconds. It is not like the really tiny spot that appears usually on LCD screens when you exert pressure on them. I noticed this spot when I was shutting the lid once. The spot probably appeared because of the pressure from closing the lid. Its not like anything is not readable anymore while this occurs but its a bit strange. MIght be normal?? It would be very kind if someone tries to do the same thing to see if it happens to. ( just push on one spot of the screen while having a black background, best would be the windows xp standard Screensaver)
Second thing, I installed CHC and noticed that my wear level is at 7 percent already. I calibrated the battery 3 times but it did not help much (1. percent). Now I am seriously doubting that my W7J was used or the battery was used or something is not right. How can I test if everything is correct. Are the problems normal?
Thanks for reading

When you apply perssure to the LID and when you see ripples on the screen, its called "Flex", however you should not apply excessive pressure to see these ripples.
Are you pressing lightly and seeing these ripples? Or really hard?
Since CHC reports 6-7% with a brand new battery it would be wise to use another program to check it. Mobilemeter, is a great tool aswell.
To check whether your battery is ok or not, consider doing a batterylife test with roughly these settings, wifi on, bluetooth off, CPU set to max battery, and GPU set to max battery, also consider screen brightness to something readable. Your expected batterylife would be 3 hours.
As for any other things to make sure your laptop is ok, try a game for the GPU, and try 3dmark05/06. Check your hard drive, HDTune program.
You may also want to try a bluetooth device just to make sure that works. -
Milestone, thanks so much for your swift answer. Yes, I see ripples, thats how I would describe it. I dont even have to press that hard. Just a soft solid push makes the area around the finger a little white. SOmetimes however those whit spots with the ripples appear. Do you experience the same sensation? I hope i did not damage my screen by pressing it, but i must say i never really pushed very hard.
I installed Mobimeter and it showed also 6%. What is a good programm to do the Battery testing? BT and Wlan work. I played QUake 4 on my W7J, on Medium it did not go perfect but its playable. How can I get a concrete score to see if my GPU and CPU are performing well? -
that problem with the w7 lid is its much much thinner than other models. cause of that vcut crap lcd. as for the battery wear it can happen. its normal to get a battery with up to 5 percent wear. I dont think its used though. You could probably call asus send them the battery they may give you a new one. dont doubt your purchase its a nice machine.

Yup, SRD is correct.
Here's the link to a another person on the forum who has a W7J, one of the great things about being on the forums is that you can compare similar models to eachother and see what are the outcomes.
http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=61752
To test your CPU, you can run PCMark05, this will test your entire system.
To test your GPU, you can run 3Dmark05/06, extensively tests the graphics.
Also when conducting these tests, have the laptop plugged in.
To see what kind of batterylife you get, use the Battery Miser, you can put your mouse over the Miser and it should give yu how much batterylife your expected to get. -

Why do people insist on pushing on their lcd panels? Actually, forget that.... why do people think lcd panels are as strong as their their crt monitors and should resist any amount of pressure? There's no lcd in the world that is going to be more resistent, although as you go larger, the panels do get a bit thicker and that helps...... and the 13.3" in the W7 is actually thinner than the 12" in the W5..... so, the panel as *weak* as an lcd panel can be because it's components are awfuly thin......
Basically... you should keep your hands off the screen.... your screen is normal, it's your activity that should not be repeated because you could damage the screen and oils from your hands are never easy to get off an lcd screen.... so try to touch it as little as possible. -
I was surprised how stong the lcd panel was on he v6 series. for such a thin screen it was solid.

..... I know the V6va isn't faced with actual glass - but the precursor to the V6va's screen, in the L5 series was actually covered with a thin piece of glass.... great for cleaning - but added to the weight and thickness. -
justin im talking about the actual casing not the lcd screen itsself. i would never press on the lcd screen. i hope thats not what the user was talking about. wasnt he talking about the back casing?

... yeah, the magnesium lid on the V6 and the W7 are just as strong as say your W2... Once you get all the screws into it from the screen, they're all rather sturdy.
-
I read the users thread wrong. At first i thought he was saying he pressed lightely on the laptop lid and was getting ripples. But hes actually pressing the screen. no Duh if you press the screen you are going to effect the crystals. dont ever ever do that. you will damage the screen. lcd screen are not made to bear any kind of pressure.
-
Allright, So i made a big mistake? how do i see if I already damaged the screen?
-
not a big mistake as long as you didnt do that constantly and decide to stop now.
-
Allright, so I still dont know if it is normal to get those Spots when you close the Lid without even having to touch anything, Can someone Try this. So put on the screen saver with black background then Shut the Lid and Open it Realy quick. See what happens. Please

I don't get how people can't understand that a screen ripples without having someone else explain to them lol.
I was 9 yrs old when I got my first laptop, it was a NEC 486 operating at 66Mhz.. And i pressed the screen and i realised, oh sh!t, it makes ripples when u press it, thats not good. So i didn't press the screen lol.. Of course it makes riples, the plastic surrounding the LCD is really filmsy and thin, so pressing it will bend it and touch the crystals just behind it. Then you get a litle ripple effect as the crystals vibrate to try the create the picture.
On CRT screens, it's not the same kind of problem because usually hardened glass is used -
hey exxi, how much did your w7j cost in hk? I'm tempted to go back to buy one if it's cheaper.
what was the buying experience like? Is there international warranty? -
I'm glad the issue has been cleared up. I was going bonkers pressing on the back of my screen. I was pressing so hard I thought I was going to punch a hole in the screen. No ripples and the magnesium lid held up great. -
haha Naszero
well, I meant the LCD itself.
And canonyau, I payed 11180 HK Dollars which is equal to aprx. 1,437.81 US dollar. i dont know if this is such a good deal, what was the cheapest you guys have ever gotten the W7J. As for the buying experience, its good, I good another 512 DDR exta and some hany things. There are 2 years International Warranty. -
Seems like most US stores are selling it for around 1400. If you bought it in Taiwan you might have gotten a better deal. -
I have seen prices as low as $1350 for the W7J. I think the differences are the U.S. has more memory and a higher clocked CPU. Looks like you have an extra 12 months of warranty compared to U.S. models. -
naszero, my question to you, did i get Ripped off so bad because I have a lower clock and less storage? I got an extra 512 but i only have 1.66 Ghz. Does that make such a great difference? yes , i have 24 mnth warranty. I feel like I made a bad deal because of the clock and the probloem about my screen. DUnno if the screen is such a great problem or if I am only making it worse in my head because the screen is okay only if I close it I see thosse marks for a while. What do you think?
-
Don't worry you're not the only one that bought a W7J in HK. I bought mine for an even more expensive price HKD 12000
But oh well.. The HK version might have a slower clock speed and less storage but that's just it I think. Did yours come with a bluetooth mouse? Mine did. It seems that the US version doesn't come with a bluetooth mouse? I'm not sure though. From what I read on the W7J review it doesn't seem to come with one? Also does the US version come with a laptop bag? Mine did. I guess I didn't get as good a deal as US buyers, but this laptop is nice. I'm quite happy with it. Besides it's only like what a 100 dollars more or less difference if you count the values of the bluetooth mouse, warranty and laptopbag? And a T2400 is only 170mhz faster than a T2300 anyway. Shouldn't be that big a difference? Don't feel bad about your purchase. What matters is that you got a nice laptop. That's my 2c.

Scratchy, thanks for the words, I take the same perspective since you convinced me. I bought it from Able computer at the Monk Kok Computer center. For some reason I dont trust those guys. It was my first time in HK and i am not used to those small stores that try to sell notebooks. I dont understand why i have such a high wear level *6* and I suspect that something is not okay with my screen since I get those ripples when I close the lid and open it again. I wanted someone to try the thing with the closing and the back background just to make sure that it is normal. So i am a little unsure about the whole thing. I also got the BT mouse and the 2 bags. I am happy about that.
-
Oh I got mine at the Mong Kok Computer Centre too. I think I got it from T-zone. Oh well what a big price difference lol. The big selling point to me was the international warranty really. Does your laptop look used? Any external blemishes? I can understand why you're worried. Hong Kong retailers/shops aren't the most honest on the planet.
Scratchy -
My W7J did not come with a Bluetooth mouse or a notebook bag.
Asus changes specifications and bundles based on what they think will sell. I don't think you got ripped off. Every region has their different prices and bundles. -
naszero, you are right, I think Its all right, I am just not sure if the device that i Bought is 100% new and clean because of the display issue and noone else confirmed that this is normal yet so I can rest with a good conscience .
-
I'll see if I can install CHC tomorrow on my laptop. I'll let you know what the battery meter says. As for the screen. I don't think I want to push on my LCD. It's genuinely not a good idea to do that. But I'll see if I can find any of the symptoms your laptop has on mine.
Scratchy -
Scratchy, thanks for your help, i really appreciate that, as for the screen, you dont even have to push it to see this. Just close it and Open it without having it switched off. Make sure you are having a black background while doing this (example. the xp screensaver) and see if you see those ripples right after you open the lid again. So, close it and open it real fast.
AS for the wear level, it would be very very kind if you check it! thank you !! -
Well,
I installed NHC on my laptop yesterday. It tells me my battery wear level is 3%. I only used the battery like 3 times. I usually take the battery out when I have the AC adapter connected. So if you have used your battery more often than me 6% should be about right. As for the screen I didn't see any white dots or anything. I did notice that there was some light leakage when I ran the windows screensaver. I wouldn't worry about the screen if it is working normally when you don't touch it or move it. You're not suppose to twist or move your screen when you're using the laptop anyway. If worse comes to worse, there's always that international warranty. -
Scratchy, thanks for the words. Wear level went down to 4 now so i think thats taken care off. My device did not look used at all and the serial numbers seem to correspond. I bought it from Able computer at the MOnk Ok center. I thought they looked pretty trustworthy and they were just celebrating their 25th anniversary. One thing that I noticed in addition is that my TAB key makes a harsher sound than all other keys.
My strange W7J...
