    Hi,
I bought A8JS 2 months ago from Newegg.com, and applied for vista upgrade program right after receiving my new laptop. I chose 64-bit upgrade, my shipping fee was charged, my order was approved, and then suddenly few days ago my order has been cancelled without any notification or explanation. I sent Moduslink an e-mail why it happened, and the following is their answer:

    Dear Customer,

Thank you for your interest in the Upgrade Redemption Program. The Windows Vista upgrade software version to which you are entitled is determined by the version of Windows XP that came bundled with your computer. If the option for 64-bit upgrade software was not given you when you processed your order online, we will not be able to send to you the 64-bit upgrade software.

    Regards,

    The Upgrade Redemption Center

Does it make sense? I chose 64-bit upgrade because it was definitely on the list that I could choose without any additional charge. I even got my order approved for over 1 month, and then suddenly few days ago, my order has been cancelled. I tried to call them on the phone, but upgrade period had been expired and there was no way to contact them on the phone. Oh, yes, my shipping fee had been charged and not remitted after my order was cancelled. They approved my order, charged my shipping fee, and then cancelled my order after the upgrade period expired. Isn't it like deception or something?

Please give me an advice what to do. Thank you.

If the shipping charge is not reversed in the next few days, make sure you at least request the 32-Bit version of Vista. Seems like they made a mistake on the order page.

Yea, the upgrade program was supposed to be for 32bit only AFAIK. Try to reorder and see if you can get anywhere with it.

I don't think it was their mistake because one of my friend also told me that there were two versions of vista on the list when he ordered. I'm not sure he has received his package or not.

If so, they should let me know and reprocessed it, not cancelling it. One of the reason that I am complaining is their customer service. Anyway, I should try what you advised me..... Thanks!

The Vista upgrade program is a joke... I don't even know if anyone has received a copy of Vista yet.

what may have happened is that they nixed the upgrade to the 64-bit os due to lack of driver support by most companies....

No, the reason is because this program is used also for Vista upgrade coupons.

If you purchased an XP Pro 64-bit OEM and got the Vista coupon with it, you are technically allowed to get a Vista Business 64-bit. Since we already have 32-bit preloaded onto our laptops, we don't get a choice, though I don't think it's fair that they provide the option and then renege on it afterwards. If we ordered it and they offered us the choice when ordering, they should've let us have it.

This whole multi-layer scheme with 32-bit/64-bit and Home, Home Premium, Business, and Ultimate is ultimately a cash grab. People don't get the features that they want, so they have to shell out to get a completely new version of Ultimate.

What's even more atrocious about this is fact that people buy the wrong one and then expect to be able to return them but can't since it's software.

Here's a true story that happened in our store: a customer bought a Vista OEM on opening day and then activated it. Then found that the system was inadequate, upgraded the thing almost through and through, and (since the system is too different) gets the key locked out because the activation server thinks the user is trying to install it on a *different* machine. So the customer comes into the store complaining that he can't use his Vista and wants a refund, we call the Microsoft activation people and he starts yelling them saying that he bought a legal Windows and couldn't f-ing use it because his system was too slow and needed to upgrade it, we get their manager, they essentially told him to f-off (like they usually do, mostly useless to call them). In the end, we needed our Microsoft sales rep to fix this guy up, but that was so f-ing stupid it wasn't funny. The worst part is, he could've copied it, used the time stopper patch and not even have to worry about this crap. It's like they say, this anti-piracy thing only really hurts and frustrates the legitimate users.

So, at last there is no other choice but re-ordering 32-bit vista by a phone call or e-mail, right?

Well, if they don't refund your card the charge for the shipping and you haven't called to accept the 32-bit version, call your credit card company ASAP and put a claim in.

Well, but I am still eligible to get 32-bit vista, so I don't need to give up my upgrade... anyway, it is annoying me.
