I notice that there's a bright white LED light that flashes whenever I turn on the machine. I believe this is found on all asus swivel webcams.
What purpose does the light serve? Is there a way to turn the light on / off in windows? It would be great to use it as a keyboard illuminator in a dark room at night.
As far as I know it doesn't flash when take a photo with the webcam..

that LED is an indicator light. It should turn on everytime your webcam is on. It indicates the status of the cam.

So next time, if some guy h4x0r3d your computer and want to see if you get down in front of the notebook, and is prepared to record it to share - you can stop it.

Thanks for the reply..
I'm referring to the bright white LED shown in the pic, not the dim blue one.. It's the square shaped thing that's barely noticeable to the left of the lens.
It lights up for a split second whenever I boot up my notebook.. Other than that it doesn't do anything. -
Here's the one I took..

Flash!
Or simulated LED flash. -

Just that it only fires during boot up / wake up from hibernate..
Taking photos using lifeframe's flash mode had no effect whatsoever on the flash.
