I just purchased the ASUS N53JQ laptop and facing the very common problem - no sound output from HDMI connection to my TV.

In control panel -> sound -> playback, there are 3 choices :-

    1. SONY TV (HD) (i.e. my TC)
    2. PC Speaker (default)
    3. Realtek digital sound output

I tried to set either 1 or 3 as default, but still no sound

In device manager -> sound -> there are 2 devices :- nvidia HD audio and Realtek HD audio. Where is HDMI connected to, nvidia or Realtex audio ???

It should be Nvidia since the HDMI port is connected to your Nvidia GPU. You should see "Nvidia HDMI Output" or similar on the sound playback devices.

This is what I have in the Sound playback screen.I

Neither Nvidia nor Realtek show HDMI, I have installed latest Nvidia driver but still doesn't work. This is really flustrated, a brand new computer I expect it works !!

Try play an audio or video file. If the sound/volume indicator at "Nvidia High Definition Audio" show activity when it set as default device, that means audio is produced & transferred to your Sony TV. Try check whether your Sony TV have ON/OFF setting for HDMI audio input or not.

After several unplug/replug, reboot and reboot again, magically it is now working :)
