Device manager says that HDD and DVD-RAM are connected to ports 0&1 which are known as SATA 6Gbps ports. However, when i use HWINFO32 program to see detailed hardware information, this is what i get

So.. am i using the faulty SATA II ports?

My second question is... on notebooks, is it possible to change the SATA ports which are used by HDD and ODD?

What you see in HWiNFO32 doesn't mean that the HDD is connected to the SATA Port 2 or 3 (3 Gbps). It just means that the drive supports maximum 3 Gbps interface.

i was confused because on the image, it says "Driver Controller: 3Gbps"

    The same for me.

    Port 0 - HDD
    Port 2 - ODD

Since HDD is connected to SATA III, there's no problem for me. thanks

Well, no problem for the HDD only. You will say good bye to your ODD sometime later.

It is independent of the usage pattern. The faulty transistor is on the clock tree which still runs even though you don't use your connected device.

Is there some way to manually switch the ODD to SATA 3 port or will people risk it eventually being lost (5-15% chance in 3 years)?

No, the port numbers are dependent on the physical design of the motherboard.

Thanks! That's the answer of my 2nd question. Thus, if the HDD was connected to 3Gbps port, we'd have to send the laptop back

Has any1 checked this on the BlueRay drive models? I'm interested in them, but don't want to pay excess if the drive is connected to a dodgy port.

The posts above confirm the normal DVD is connected to dodgy ports, but I'm hoping the BlueRay was connected to the spare SATA 3 port.

If you didn't buy one before they pulled them off the shelf, it won't be a problem....

So, I just picked up one of these laptop about a week or so before the big SB problem. Do you really think it is worth the the recall? It is a decent laptop and I am happy with it so far. But I would hate to lose the ODD in a year and not be able to fix it at all. I was hoping to use this laptop for a few years at least.

How long will they last with the defect?

ALSO, It says I am using port 0 for HDD and port 2 for ODD. Is there any way to change my ODD to port 1 so I can avoid all this crap down the line?

No, as I posted earlier, the ports are dependent on the physical layout of the board, there is no way to change them. There is no telling if you will be affected by the defect, if you are concerned about it you need to contact your reseller soon to get in line for a replacement system.
