I bought a N550JV (well, it's actually a R552JV but it's the same thing) a few days ago and recently I've noticed that the laptop won't sleep when I tell it to. Whether I close the lid, press the power button once, press the designated sleep button on the keyboard or select 'sleep' from within windows, the computer will always shut down. Also, it isn't a quick shut down, it takes about 5 minutes from when the screen goes black (which happens instantly) to when it finally powers off.

I am aware of the different settings in the power options that control what happens when things like the lid is closed and on every power plan it is set to sleep.
Every time the shut down happens, the event viewer acknowledges that the computer unexpectedly shut down and that the computer did not cleanly shut down.
    I am running Windows 8.1.

Does anyone have any idea what might be going on?

    Any help will be appreciated!

As an update to this, it seems as though there is a problem with shutting down in general. Each shut down takes about 5 minutes which is unreasonably long, especially for a brand new laptop.

Did the computer come with Windows 8 and you upgraded to 8.1 and if so did it have the same issues when you were on 8?

No, the problem has only been observed in windows 8.1. I even did a system refresh back to Windows 8 which made it better, and I didn't install anything other than 8.1 and the problem immediately came back when 8.1 was installed.

While I'm not glad you're running into that, it's good that you brought it up. We are offering 8.1 and this is the sort of thing we need to be made cognizant of. Have you brought this up to Asus support? Also: what is your BIOS version (is it current)?

Still not sure what the cause is but would suggest going onto asus.com and getting the 8.1 driver updates as well as a BIOS update if available (and comfortable doing it) as ProStar mentioned.

My drivers were all updated and my BIOS was also up to date. I actually thought that the BIOS would be the problem so I checked it almost immediately.

Anyway, I have actually found a solution which is working very well, at least for the sleeping side of things. I'll post it here for anyone else trawling through forums for a similar problem -just like I was like I was for the solution.

    This is what I did:
    1) I ran a 'energy report' by typing " powercfg -energy" into the admin command prompt.
    2) This showed that there was a device/driver that was requesting that the computer didn't enter sleep mode. This driver was "srvnet" under the directory: \FileSystem\srvnet
    3) By typing " powercfg -requestsoverride driver \FileSystem\srvnet system" into the command prompt, the request to prevent sleep was overridden and everything was better.

I still have a bit of a problem with it hanging on shut down. The system gets ready to shut down but then once the screen goes black, it'll take another five minutes before the power finally turns off. But I can live with that problem - a sleeping laptop is more important to me.

Thank you for your help anyway - I am so pleased I've managed to find a solution, it was ruining the laptop for me.

I had a similar issue with my N550JV - after updating to Windows 8.1 the laptop wouldn't power off; instead it hung for about 5 minutes then restarted. The only way to shut it off was to hold down the power button. It turns out (in my case at least) the problem had to do with the Qualcomm Bluetooth driver, and disabling this driver solved the shutdown problem. After disabling the driver, I did a complete uninstall of the Qualcomm drivers (through the control panel -> uninstall programs, not through the device manager) then reinstalled the latest version of the driver from Asus' website (version 8.0.1.306). Now I have the latest Bluetooth driver, it's enabled, and my shutdown problems appear to be solved.

    I hope this helps...

I had the same problem: my N550JV was unable to go to standby and shutdown it did take than 5 minutes (I didn't even wait that long most of the times...). The problem was the Bluetooth driver too. I had Qualcom suite version 8.0.1.305 and upgrading it to 8.0.1.306 solved the issue. Thanks a lot guys! You saved me a lot of time!

Hi guys. I just wanted to chime in and say thank you for pinning down the exact problem and coming up with a solution. I just bought the N550JV and upgraded it to Windows 8.1 and had this exact problem. Just to be safe I removed the bluetooth driver first, and my computer shut down properly. I updated to the latest version and the problem is fixed.
