I was just looking online and a few places are saying that the N550JV-DB71-CA is maxed out on RAM at 8GB? sounds rather low for that machine, Anybody that can verify that number? If it is expandable what is the Max ram allowed. I am asking for the CA version if that makes any difference at all.

I don't know if they placed any false restrictions on that machine(not sure why they would), but other N-series laptops can have more. They might mean that there are not slots left by default, as it ships with two 4GB sticks and there are only two slots.

The processor that comes with it, the 4700HQ, definitely supports more(can't recall exact number, but it's either 16GB or 32GB).

I just can't imagine that ASUS would restrict it to 8GB. But then again, the N550JV has a closed chassis that you have to take the entire bottom off, so it wasn't built for immediate access to RAM, HD and other items.

For what it's worth, I got the N56JR-MH71 from Microcenter. I was considering the N550JV, but for the same price this one had better specs(unless you want a touchscreen, then the N56JR doesn't offer that). And the MH71 comes stock with 16GB of RAM. I know you didn't ask for suggestions, but just throwing it out there.

Ty so much for the reply. I looked at yours and I am not too sure of differences other then ram and screen. I really wanted the FHD matte IPS for photo editing while away. If there are other major difference let me know. Mine doesn't, have touch, can't stand it on a laptop. Cheers

Really, there aren't many differences, but the key differences are the RAM and the N56JR-MH71 has a 7200RPM hard drive instead of the 5400RPM drive in the N550JV. The N550 has a little MORE space, but it's a slower drive.

The screen on the N56JR isn't IPS, but it's really good. Most of what I do revolves around Photoshop and other visual design tools, and it's been great. The viewing angle is 150 degrees, and you can see content on the screen at almost any angle. And the screen is pretty bright as well. I have no complaints here at all. And of course, both have the FHD resolution.

The nice thing about the N550JV-DB71-CA is it came with a 7200rpm drive also. I had seen it listed in the specs but assumed it was an error, but sure enough its there.

We outfit the N550JVs with more than 8 GB. I would think that, unless Asus altered the system firmware, yours is no exception and can support more than 8 GB max. If memory serves me correctly (pun), the laptop supports up to 16 GB of RAM (two 8 GB sticks).

Really? The specs on all sites I've seen say it has a 5400RPM drive. Unless you maybe got it custom built? The ASUS site does list 7200 as an option for the N550 series, but I haven't seen it anywhere. Maybe the CA version is the one that has it?

Regardless, good for you! I think ASUS makes some great machines and I'm enjoying my second ASUS laptop in a row, and have no complaints. Glad you're enjoying the N550!

I came across this thread in search of whether I can upgrade my N550JV to 32GB ram. Apologies if this thread is redundant. I purchased my laptop with 16GB ram so as far as I can tell, yours should be upgradable to at least that. Also, mine had the 5400rpm HD. A definite choking point in the laptop's performance.

I'd recommend replacing it with an SSD which I did just a few days ago using the Samsung 840 evo 500GB. I've timed the boot up procedure at around 6.5 sec from pressing the power button to the login screen which is hell quick and highly recommended. Since then, I've changed the my laptop setting to shutdown when I close the lid to save battery.
