I have an Asus N56VZ-RH71 with a factory DVD/Blu ray drive and when I place either a DVD or Blu ray movie in the optical drive nothing happens.

I can use DVD ROM media like an installation disk or copy files to DVD write blank discs but no movies!

Should the N56VZ-RH71 out of the box from the factory play DVD or Blu ray movies or do I need some 3rd party software such as PowerDVD or something?

    Thanks!

    ...Glenn :)

You need the proper codecs to read media that is encoded for blu-ray. The laptop should have come with a multimedia suite just for that, such as Cyberlink PowerDVD.

Windows 8 does not support DVD or bluray playback nativly, you can try using a free DVD player like VLC to test the optical drive is ok.

VLC is good but last I heard, it will not support Blu-Ray playback. Meaker's suggestion is good OP if you simply want to test the hardware. Just keep in mind that in order to test it thoroughly, you'll need different software for a blu-ray disc movie.

Yes. Has to do with license rights and "optional" encryption on blu-ray. Unencrypted blu-rays can be played easily. But..

So to get coded blu-rays to play on a pc with the decryption and full rates... you need a licensed player, with it's own (direct) rendering engine.

Mine plays DVDs out if the box, now I'll have to toss in a blu ray and verify that it also works.
