The touchpad on this notebook is far too sensitive, and there are not any settings that I can find in any control panel to adjust the sensitivity. Are people installing alternative drivers?

If there is a separate control utility made by elantech or Asus for your touchpad, you might have to change the sensitivity there. That is the case for my Dell laptop, all I get in control panel is a clickable link that takes me to the utility in the touchpad tab.

    and in case there isn't:

If you know your touchpad's manufacturer, you can look for a driver on station drivers. From a quick research, looks like it's made by Elantech (make sure it is) so here's a link to the generic driver: ELANTECH Drivers. There might be some driver updates on Asus' website as well.

Make sure to create a restore point before trying that driver just in case. I've had cases of generic synaptics drivers not working 100% correctly on my Asus notebooks.

A lot of people have this gripe with trackpads in general, regardless of make and model. If any driver software utility or 3rd party utility doesn't open the option for you to control the sensitivity, you can always disable the trackpad and use an external mouse - most people's preference (at least as far as practical use goes; perhaps not the most convenient measure for portability).
