Any word on what real life battery life will be? I'm looking to replace my aging desktop and my wife's laptop (so, need 2 new ones) and this one seems like the best bang for buck I've seen. Been holding out for something with a discrete graphics card, USB 3.0, and decent battery life.

Nopes but hopes are high.. it will may be work around 4-5 hours if on integrated graphics and 1-2 hours if on discrete.. just guessing anyway..

If the battery life is even close to 4, I'll be buying 2 in a heartbeat.

I looked at the i7 version, but sub 2 hour of life isn't what I want.

i am guessing the battery life because first it will be having i5 which consumes around 35w compared to 45w in i7

anyone having any idea about the performance difference between GT325M and HD5730?

    (N61JQ has i7 720 along with HD5730 and N61JV has i5 430 along with GT325M)

The GT 325M looks to be much slower than the HD 5730.

    http://www.notebookcheck.net/Mobile-Graphics-Cards-Benchmark-List.844.0.html

Mobility Radeon HD 5730 is ranked 37 and the GeForce GT 325M is ranked at 61.

Also the GT 325M is older technology so it only supports DirectX 10.1 vs 11.

But if you're going for battery life, I'm not sure what the difference on Power would be.

GT 325M is NOTHING compared to the HD 5730 . . . . :( Why, Optimus Prime?? Why can't you transform into something bigger to help me fight my foes in my games :(

    http://www.amd.com/us/products/notebook/graphics/ati-mobility-hd-5700/Pages/hd-5730-specs.aspx

Shows the HD5730 @ 27w. With the i7's 45w that would be 72w between them. If the N61JV is using integrated graphics in comparison that would be about half the power usage.

There's major difference between Thermal Design Envelopes (TDP) and the lower power state the components are in when in battery saving mode.

True, but it seems thats about the only spec you can really find on most of the parts. If those 2 big pieces of two laptops are roughly double, one would think that the battery life would vary by a similar amount.

I think the N61JA was a better product. Not that it matters much for me, but I'd rather see that released. That nVidia video card really needs a refresh. Personally I like nVidia better but they don't have anything that competes right now compared with ATI at this price point.

what will be the ultimate benefit of DX11 support?
and does the GT325 will be capable of playing all the recent games?

The GT 325M is a fairly big step back from the GT 240M that was used in the previous N61. If we look at the different performance segments like this:

    [ low end ][ mid range ][ performance ][ high end ]

    ...

You're kidding me. Why on earth do all the switchable graphics options have a video card with performance that might as well be integrated? Okay, a slight exaggeration, but the point is that first we have the U30JC with a 310M. Then came the N82JN with a 330M. Now we have this with a 325M.

Basically asking us to choose between a kick in the shin or a kick in the balls. I'll take shin any day, but I won't be happy about it.

Actually, the N82Jv supposedly should come with GT 335M which is sort of about where the GT 240M. That makes it very weird, how a smaller laptop in the same line would have a better video card. The GT 325M and GT 330M in the same range. The GT 335M is a step above that. Weird, eh? I thought so too.

honestly DX11 means crap. DX 10 is hardly being used at the moment. The performance in recent games is going to be ok, but not great. I think ASUS is laying a dud with this one, unless they offer a better graphics card option.

Not a lot of games are DX11 or upcoming release of Dx11 games, at lease not yet, but all things being equal I rather have DX11 support than not.

Yes Adamal is right, will be able to play but not great.

I see the N61JV is in stock at Amazon now, anyone see any reviews of it yet? I'm really interested in seeing what real world battery life is on this sucker.

Any other retailers have it for sale yet?

I also would like to see real-world battery life testing. I would think that dual-core instead of quad-core and switchable graphics should make it last a lot longer than the N61JQ, for one.
However, I'm mostly interested in the battery life because that'll give me an indication of the battery life of the N82Jv, which is the 14.1" with the GT 335M.

A bit off topic probably, but I want to know if optimus can be enabled just using SW if I have a laptop with core i5(which has IGP) and a supported nvidia card 330m.

it's mostly black....you really have to look at it really closely to see the brown. I'm only able to see it when I'm outdoors in bright light....otherwise it looks black.

That's false advertisement from Amazon...it really is a 2.26ghz processor with Turbo Boost up to 2.53ghz.
