Do I have to buy a new OS if I replace the N71JQ-X1 mobo? I'm asking since I think the DC port on the mobo fried itself and I think it will be horribly expensive to replace through ASUS so I'm going to try and replace it myself.

No you shouldn't have to buy a new OS, the new mobo will have a license in its BIOS but you may have to reactivate windows.

actually if you do it yourself it will be MUCH Much cheaper. The dc jacks themselves go for under $10 on ebay. All you will have to do is solder it to the motherboard.

Previous poster is correct. New motherboard should work fine with Windows. However, if you do find a motherboard, would you mind posting on here where you found it? I have been looking for one and haven't found a site that I know and trust that is selling. All I've really found is this motherboard-home.com which I have never purchased anything from, or heard anything about, so it makes me a little nervous.

Also, it is possible to solder the new jack to your exsisting motherboard, I did this about 3 months ago and mine worked fine up until now. Now my board is completely unresponsive, so I'm giving up on trying to repair it any further.

    Good luck!

Just FYI. Motherboard-home.com is sold out of N71JQ motherboards, I purchased one a few days ago and got my refund today with a note that they are sold out.

If anyone has any other ideas as to where I could go about getting one please let me know.
