I successfully installed XP on my N80Vn-GP011C and ran some benchmarks. Here's a comparison between Vista and XP.

I tried RivaTuner, EVGA Precision, and nTune to overclock the 9650m GT, but none would stick. Perhaps we need to wait for an update.

    Vista

    3DMark 2006 (Resolution) Driver Version
    4201 (1280x1024) 177.92
    4722 (1280x800) 177.92

    Fallout 3
    54.0 FPS - Medium Setting (177.92)
    28.5 FPS - High Setting (177.92)

    HD Tune
    [IMG]

    XP

    3DMark 2006 (Resolution) Driver Version

    4378 (1280x1024) 177.92
    4934 (1280x800) 177.92
    4922 (1280x800) 179.13

    Fallout 3
    56.0 FPS - Medium Setting (179.13)
    29.0 FPS - High Setting (179.13)

    HD Tune
    [IMG]

The only thing that doesn't work in XP is the IR receiver, XP drivers don't exist for it and Vista 32 drivers fail.

I'm tired and I need to get up early tomorrow so I'm done playing with the laptop for now. I won't be back until Wednesday.

Thanks! Can you provide a link to the drivers you used? I need to get vista off this system ASAP.

You are going to get rid of vista because XP got 0.5 fps high in Fallout 3 at high settings?
You know it could just be the driver...

No, it's because I hate Vista. I have like 25 process running in XP because it's so clean :p

I'll post all of the drivers and instructions later, I have to leave in 6 minutes for a trip!

I'm assuming that the 1280x1024 benchmarks were run over an external monitor for testing.

Nice, thanks for this... I had read that Asus didn't have any XP drivers for the N80 line...

I'm guessing trying to setup XP 64 on this is a no go, due to drivers.

Also, do all N80Vn laptops come with integrated bluetooth, including the N80Vn-X1?

    Thanks again

I have xp running on my n80 as well. For the most part, I copied the directions gentech posted in their xp installation guide for the f8va. Then I got the nvidia driver from the g50v review.

lol here here. My thoughts exactly. At this point, the only reason to be forced to "deal" with vista is to have DX10. XP is cleaner, more efficient, and has way less overhead.

Okay, so just for some comparison, here's some data from my N80Vn-A1:

    With Vista:
    overall windows experience: 4.8
    processor: 4.9
    memory: 4.8
    graphics: 4.9
    gaming graphics: 5.3
    hard disk: 5.3

3d mark scores with power4gear set to "high performance" and using the "windows classic" theme (presumably this turns Aero off...):
    3d marks: 4477
    SM 2.0 score: 1906
    HDR/SM3.0: 1713
    CPU score 1690

Now, after installing XP (using NHC on "max performance" instead of power4gear):
    3D mark:
    3DMarks: 4735
    SM2.0 Score: 2003
    HDR/SM3.0 Score: 1846
    CPU score: 1737

I belatedly realized that I probably could have gotten better performance under Vista if power4gear was set to "Super performance" instead of "high performance". Oh well, too late to go back now! :p

    Hey all.

I just got this laptop and Im a little dissapointed that it runs Farcry2 on DX10 High 1280x800 at only 20 fps out of the box :(

I see that for your tests you used version 179.13 and 177.92. I downloaded these and tried to install, but the installer says it cant locate any drivers compatible with my hardware. I have the same laptop!

Can anyone tell me how to install these video drivers please?

    thanks

thanks E.B.E. I managed to install the new beta 180.xx driver using a modded inf. Sadly, it did not make a difference.

I ran 3Dmark06 and got 4663 so i think my laptop's performance is average for its model, however a few people claim they run Farcry2 flawlessly on the N80 while mine cant pass 30 fps unless i tun everything down low and use Dx9 >:O

Anyone have suggestions as to how to make this thing run faster? other than over clocking?

Try the Chicony_CNF7129 Camera Driver that's on your driver disk. Unzip into a folder, go to device manager, right click on the camera and update drivers.

A note to everyone using XP, your laptop might freeze randomly when coming back from standy or unplugging the AC adapter. This is because of a faulty ACPI driver, try uninstalling it and installing the latest XP one found here.

    http://support.asus.com/download/download.aspx?SLanguage=en-us
Select Notebook, then Drivers, then ATKDRV, select XP

Download ATK0100 ACPI Driver and install.

You can also find latest XP drivers for other generic components this way.

I posted this in the Review-Impressions section but this is probably the better place to put this...

Hey guys, I actually just received this laptop yesterday morning and have been running a couple tests to see what kind of performance I could squeeze out of this thing. When I first received it, it was running kind of sluggish due to all the bloatware I guess but after following E.B.E's guide on optimizing Vista on Asus notebook this thing started really running. Now for the good part...I actually wanted to see what kind of benefit I was getting from all these tweaks so I ran 3DMark06 once after the guide, I then updated the 9650MGT driver to 179.28 and ran it again after using ScuderiaConchiglia's defrag/optimizer and ran it a third and last time after using Vista's own defrag and overclocking slowly but surely at 10 mHz intervals to find that the most stable speed for the core and mem speed were, respectively, 651Mhz and 547Mhz. At this point the temp readings reach a max of ~72~74C which was very surprising.

My results in 3DMark06 were actually pretty awesome:
    First run (stock driver + E.B.E's guide) = 4667
    Second Run (Updated driver + defrag/optimizer= 4729
Final Run (Vista Defrag + OC) = 5838

I would like to know what you all think of these numbers...I was actually pretty impressed!
Oh and I used snipping tool to save the scores after each test so if any of you doubt just tell me and I'll post them up.
