Anyone has this similiar situation? I bought this laptop last year Nov 26th, got it at 28th... The usb port has been fine, I checked everything, uninstall and reinstall the drivers. Tried window recovery although I know it won't help but didn't help trying... And it is still not working... I have no idea why it is not recognizing everything that I plug in... my mouse, my thumb drive, my tablet... All are not revognized. I tried all 5 ports, 1 on the left, 2 on the right, and 2 on the back... They are all not working......... :(

They were working before I left work today and when I boot it up at home, it didn't recognize a thing.

It has that typical msg saying USB Drive Not Recognized... One of the USB devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned, and Windows does not recognize it.

Is it a hardware or software issue? Personally I don't think it is a software since i tried reinstalling the usb driver... I hope it is not a hardware issue :(

    Please help...

try booting into a linux live disc, and if it does not work, call up asus, because it is a hardware issue.

Yes I was doing my own search after the post, I see there are so many different ones, since I'm not familiar with this, is there a recommanded one that people find it better? Or are they all the same? Thanks

plug in a usb keyboard and go into your bios. If it does not work there it is hardware related.

I recommend Ubuntu. It's one of the easiest to work with.

Stealthl's idea is also a good one.

one thing i notice is that, when i plug in the mouse or tablet. The mouse has optical light, and my tablet has a blinking light. Which means it can supply power to those two... so does that mean it's a software problem?

    not necessarily...
the power still should go to the port, even if it is dead

Update: I havn't bring my laptop to the service center yet.
I was going to bring it yesterday however when I turn the laptop on at work, the usb ports are all working fine. Therefore I thought it was fixed so I brough it back home and turns out all 5 ports are not working again! So I format, tried to install vista and usb ports still not work. I format and got xp back on it and it still did not work.

I brought it in for work today and use the usb keyboard and try to get in the BIOS with the usb keyboard and it worked! Load into WinXP and all the ports are working again...

The only thing I notice is different is when i turn on my laptop at work, I don't have the internet connected. Where as at home I have wireless network connected when I turn the laptop on. I don't know if it is related or not... However after I format reinstall it, there's not wireless driver or anything and it still won't work... so I don't understand why it works when I brings it to work and not work when I brings it back home... I also use AC power both at home and at work...

This is truly a weird one! Did you have to change any settings to access your home network? The only thing I can think of - and it's unlikely - is that the networking is "stepping" on your USB device addresses or memory somehow.

One thought would be at home when it's not working to go into Device Manager and look for memory or device conflicts; they usually are shown by a yellow ? or a red !.

if not have you tried using the ASUS recovery partition to reset everything back to the factory state to see if that helps?

    ram might be bad...
this may sound crazy, but when you think about it, it may be true...
Because the wireless card sends info to the ram, which might displace bus information... not probable, but maybe.

More likely is that your wireless card has an issue and is causing the usb ports to not get power.

i suggest doing a reformat while at work, and not connecting to a wireless network.
If it works, go home and check it, with OUT going online.

Thank you for your input, guys! :) I went to the ASUS service center and talk to the tech guy there. He thinks it's software issue which I think can somewhat make sense. But he needs to format the 2 partition which i had data on one, so I brought it home...

As I mentioned, yesterday at work, the usb ports worked. During the time at ASUS service cetner, I turn the laptop on and it was fine, we tested out 2 usb mouse and both works (not connected to the wireless network). So I let the computer stay on and head back home. As soon as I get into the house, I got wireless connection. However all the usb ports are still working, and I even shut down and restart the computer. It is still working... so I'm not sure what it is anymore... I will need to see if this happen again today after I get home and turn on the laptop...

The suggestion tallan made about the device manager, I checked it every single restart during the time that the usb ports were not working... and used the ASUS recovery disc to put vista back in. That one I recovery only C:\ didn't recover D:\ since I don't think D:\ matters cause I only use D:\ for storage.

Aan310: does that mean I need to have my network card and ram replaced...?T_T

well, my theory was pretty out there...
i suggest downloading a Memtest CD ( http://www.memtest.org/) and use that to check your ram, then id that is clean, to a full reinstall of vista with the factory vista, BUT, format any and all Partitions (other than the recovery partition).

If the problem still occurs, and you did all that, then it's a motherboard or a wireless card issue.
