Whenever I play TF2 for more than 20 minutes the game starts stuttering badly due to what I assume is the GPU overheating. I've looked for some way to control the fan but have found nothing. Any other N81vp owners have this problem? Is there a any way to manually set the fan speed? I'd really rather not have to get a cooler.

please monitor your temperatures in speedfan and hwmonitor, and tell us / give us a screenshot of the readings
(and speedfan might be able to control the fan speed too)

also a quick fix (*IF* heat is the problem) is to clean out your fans with compressed air, and prop the back of the laptop up with something (a couple of erasers, anything)

btw - i'm using a n81vp-d1, and i have zero problems with heat, just one stuck CPU sensor.

It's definitely not dusty. It's not even a week old yet. I always make sure to prop is up, too. I'll check back with readings.

Using the GPUTool Community Tech preview I've been able to change the fan speed, but the program always gives me trouble. Also, Speedfan is not detecting my GPU and isn't even able to show my CPU fan speed. I'll play some TF2 and get back with hwmonitor and GPU-Z readings.

    GPU-Z:
    Highest temp was 97C
The fan went to 100% only a handful of times according to the log, otherwise it was 70%

    hwmonitor:
    ACPI (THRM) Max: 73C
    CPU Core 0 Max: 63C
    CPU Core 1 Max: 59C
    HDD Max: 40C

that does sound like a tough situation, but as said, prop the thing up. dust would really only collect after a long time (like a year) before the airflow really decreases. i think the n81 exhausts air to the side, so just make sure there's room for it over there as well, but that's a bit obvious

the rest of those temps definitely seem acceptable though

I really think if I could get some decent fan control it wouldn't be a problem. Maybe there's a flaw with my GPU or something. Think I should go to the trouble of sending it in to Asus?

as mentioned, your temperatures look fine.
are you sure the stuttering is due to the GPU overheating?
have you checked to see if any other programs are running, and try turning off the power4play option in ati catalyst, and any other power management programs
also, have you noticed if it's always the same scenes (eg. battle intensive) that stutter?
also leave task manager running, and check the CPU usage and what processes are running when the game starts to stutter ( alt-tab out of the game)

I have it set on high performance and I manually set it up to make sure there would be no restrictions for anything. The stuttering starts happening after playing the game for a while and keeps happening no matter what's going on in-game. I have no other major processes running and if they were causing the problem, then I don't think the first 30 minutes or so of playing would be perfectly fine. Is 97C really an acceptable temp for the 4650?

Heckkk no! 97 degrees is not an average temp for the n81vp! I am typing on one myself and with hours of gaming only get into the 80's if that...97 is not a good temp...This machine runs cool compared to other gaming machines.

You need to keep working on getting that down.

Where did you buy the laptop at?

ExacliberPC. I was thinking of sending it in to Asus because even if I can halfway fix the problem with fan control, I shouldn't have to.

Edit: It seems unless I use GPUTool, my fan stays at 30% no matter what. I'm assuming this has something to do with messing around in GPUTool screwing up the defaults. Does anyone know how to resore the default fan profile? However, screwing with the fan settings has given me acceptable temperatures.

Forgot to mention that I can't reset the defaults in GPUTool because I get an error when trying to.

I would contact the laptop vendor. If it had not been too long since you bought it, you could probably return it for a new one. That bites that maybe you got a defective laptop. Are you sure the temp reader is accurate? You might want to try a different gpu temp reader to see if it is saying the same temp.

I would say going through Asus would be the last option. You don't want to do that unless you absolutely have to.

Asus told me to update the BIOS, which seemed to have fixed the fan speed not changing, but not much else. I checked the temps and playing HL2: Ep2 it hit 101C, Red Faction Guerilla hit 100C, and TF2 hit 103. In TF2 the fan still won't go beyond 30% for some reason. So, I'm definitely RMAing it. Hopefully I can get one that works in return.
