As the topic states, I am having issues with (and always slightly have) my wireless.

My friends ancient XP laptop with a single core can load sites more quickly.

I updated from v8.0.0.351 to v9.2.0.105, but this didn't appear to fix the problem.

The internet isn't awful it just shouldn't be slower than an awful laptop's...

Windows update has newer drivers. I'm using those with no issues.

I chose to update the driver via the internet and it worked, which it failed to do with the previous version, and hard.

Only time will tell how the new version will work out..

But to me it still seems slow. Definitely not 2009 purchased computer.

Check your power management settings. Maybe set the wireless power saving to a less aggressive mode.

    Highest performance possible.

    Still no fix.

Updating version may in fact have hurt.

Are you in a congested area? Are there other networks sharing the same channels?

The wireless range sucks on the N82JQ-B1 too.
I have tried fiddling around with updates and settings to no avail.
I get 2 bars with the N82JQ-B1 compared to my W520 with 6205 @ 5 bars in the same spot within my home.

AR9285 is 1x1 while 6205 is a 2x2, so the 6205's range and speed will be better than the AR9285. Try these drivers for your AR9285, they are the latest version as of now.
