I got myself a Zalman NC2000 to complement my G50V upon recommendation from most of the Accessories department (NZXT Cryo not available here in Singapore). For those interested in what the NC2000 is, I would highly recommend checking the review at http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=235021. I must say, its almost like the NC2000 was built for the G50V in terms of dimensions and size. The vent area of the NC2000 just about matches up to the locations of the G50V's intake vents. The size of the whole cooler is very slightly larger than the G50V itself which is about perfect.

For a while after getting it, I began to suspect that the cooler isn't really doing anything. The G50V's intake vents consist of many slits so perhaps not conducive to a cooler which has such a large vent area. So, I decided to do an empirical test to see what it actually does. I also saw Gophn's mod at the bottom of the aforementioned review and decided to have a go at that too.

    Test conditions:
Ambient temperature: 29.5~30C (I live in Singapore and my air-con was off)
    1. Activate Orthos and Folding@Home GPU edition ( I figured that this would be the best way to strain the GPU evenly. Dunno whether it actually pushes it to the full but my temps are betting on it)
    2. 10 minutes to warm up from idle
    3. HWmonitor is turned on
    4. 30 minutes to continue the tests

Results: (Scroll down. Dunno why this is happening)

I do apologize for the table... I haven't got any HTML skills to speak of. All temperatures are in Celsius, of course.

    Conclusion:
If you're sweltering in 30C weather (today was a cool day) and you have a G50V, then by all means, get the NC2000. It'll keep your G50V a good 4~5 degrees cooler, keeping your GPU under 90C. The results were unspectacular however. I was hoping for more of a 8 degree drop in temperature Really, the main point of getting this is turning out to be the elevated keyboard which is turning out to be incredibly necessary. I got a bit dizzy looking at the laptop laid flat on the table. If you live somewhere nice and cold with actual seasons, then the cooler might not be so necessary. Just get a cheap stand.

Seeing as you're willing to cough up the money to get the NC2000 in the first place, I might recommend trying Gophn's mod when you have loads of time to kill (like I did). The basic idea is that you lay a DIY template on top of your NC2000 to direct airflow into the vents of the G50V. I made mine out of a sheet of construction paper. I reckon tissue paper would also hold if the current crisis pushes you that far. The NC2000's airflow speed leaves much to be desired.

Thanks for doing this test. It will be usefull to anyone looking to get the temps down. I was just wondering if the temps would be the same with the laptop laid flat on the table, in comparison to the laptop elevated at the back for better air intake (with lets say with a dvd box).
