Hi everyone, I just got a new Asus w7s-b2b, I LOVE IT!! I was fully aware of the heat issues for this 13.3 laptop before my purchase. It does heat up to levels where I think a notebook cooler is needed, and i also plan to upgrade the RAM to 2.5GB. I have my mind on the Zalman nc-1000 as recommended by the forums. Would it be efficient on this Asus? Thanks for your help!

ClearSkies Well no, I'm still here..
The W7 runs warm, yes, but does not overheat to the point where it is dangerous over the long term to internal component life. This has been well established and debated around here for a long time, since it's initial release two years ago.
External notebook coolers, even the Zalman, are unlikely to conjure up a substantial temp drop for something with such a small chassis as the W7 (I would expect something in the range of 5 degrees, give or take), so don't expect miracles there. It's still going to warm up because of all the heat-generating components inside that little box.

Instead of a notebook cooler I would recommend focusing on power management.
Specifically:
- Important: developing efficient power profiles for the CPU (which downclock when not using intensive CPU apps). I don't really trust Power4Gear, it's too black-box/not transparent.
- Important: either using RivaTuner to control the GPU frequencies (it can give issues though, so be careful) OR revert back to XP and make sure you use a GPU driver that supports the Power Savings profile
- use undervolting for the CPU when it does need to ramp up the clocks. -

I am also looking for a notebook cooler for my W7S and have been interested on getting the Zalman NC-1000B due to it's price and good reviews.
However I'm not that desperate on getting a cooler at the moment, and as E.B.E. suggests, I'd rather do some GPU tweaks as it's the hottest component at full tilt. -
I forgot to say this: for downclocking and undervolting the CPU, I recommend RMClock. Click Tips and Tricks in my signature, you'll find a very quick guide on how to do it.

Thanks for the help! However what is the issues with Rivatuner that you mentioned? I just want to know in advance before I play around with it lol...

Hey man please let me know how you tweaked your GPU safely, and were you satisfied with the results? Thanks!

Stay tuned, I'm now testing power management on my W7S. I've managed to drop CPU temps on full blast by 12 degrees Celsius.
I will also manage in the end to downclock the GPU, to drop idle temps.
And I will investigate whether SuperFLM can be used to drop idle temps.
I'll post the procedure once I'm done. I hope at the latest tomorrow. -
