First of all, thank you to everyone for sharing their experiences and references to specific drivers.
I have a G2S-B1 and I successfully installed XP on it by creating a slipstreamed bootable installation disk with
SATA drivers. I installed most of the other drivers by sourcing them directly from the OE manufacturers or from the G1S driver package that someone posted (since, as most of us have learned by now, ASUS chooses not to provide XP drivers or XP support for this laptop model just because) My only remaining major problem is the video card driver for NVIDIA 8600GT. Neither the version fromthe ASUS support site (169.06) nor the NVIDIA Forceware driver (163.75) install, but give the following error message "The NVIDIA Setup program could not locate any drivers that are compatible with your current hardware. Setup will now exit." Has anyone encountered this problem and can recommend a solution?
Based on my quick research, it seems like the problem is in the .INF file, which needs to be modified to allow using
the Forceware driver (which is meant for a desktop card) on a laptop, and one can apparently get the modified .INF
file from Laptopsvideo2go.com which is unfortunately down.
On a side note, here's a bit of a rant. I can't believe OEMs are leaving their consumers out in the cold just by
choosing not to provide Windows XP support. I consider myself a relatively advanced user, who has built many computers myself and installed/configured various OS versions more times than I care to mention, but what about an average user? One pays quite a bit of money for a computer, and has to struggle and resort to various tricks to get it to work, unless one is content with having not quite ready-to-wear Vista shoved down their throats. After all, G2S is advertised as "Vista ready", not "XP incompatible", but ASUS tech support says 'Sorry, we don't officially support XP for this model' How about unofficially? And with all due respect to GentechPC.com which provided me with excellent shopping experience (and that I still highly recommend for all your laptop shopping needs), I wish they'd be more upfront and feature prominent warnings on their website that some ASUS models are not officially supported for XP. They do offer "Windows XP Professional 32 CD" option when you configure your system. Does it mean they fully configure it with all the drivers? If so, why don't they share their wealth of information on this site, since they frequent it? They gave one advice on installing XP with a SATA harddrive (upgrading your BIOS to 209, and choosing SATA compatibility mode), which turned out to be incorrect since that BIOS version has no such option.

    Thank you for listening
