I have a Z96 and I can't figure out why my laptop speakers won't shut off when I plug my headphones in. There is sound coming through my headphones but I want my speakers to turn off also. Any suggestions?

I have no idea how the headphone sensor is implemented, but if it's a simple contact as I presume it is, then

    Try to:
    1. See if the headphone jack is inserted all the way in. If not, try pushing it harder (without damaging the laptop though)
    2. If it is pushed and the speakers are still on, try a different set of headphones. Some jacks are not-quite-standard dimensions and that might mean that they don't make contact with the sensor.

If neither works, I think the contact which senses when heaphones are plugged in is either damaged or wrongly placed.

or, there might be a software setting which keeps the speakers on, though that's less likely.

Well I have tried two sets of headphones and both work but the speakers still remain on. I'm hoping its a software problem.

Its a drivers issue I belueve, I've heard of it before for other models.

Try upgrading your audio drivers and make sure its not corrupt. Perhaps a BIOs update could fix it.

I don't know if this would do anything but, try going into Control Panel, Sounds and Audio Devices, then in the Volumes tab, under Speaker Settings. Click Advanced and choose No Speakers. Plug your headphones in and see if that works.

It probably doesn't work, I'm just throwing up ideas.

The speakers not turning on I believe are a software glitch, for example, after installing windows updates the speakers would stay on. After reboot, they would turn off finally. Check the drivers and also make sure that the jack isnt in the microphone port(nearly did that once!)
