Could use some help here, don't know if anyone's been able to compare these two IRL.

The X5 is back as a 850 open box- the only thing really that had worried me about it was the "loud" mouse buttons as i would be using it in school. It does have 64bit Vista installed though, instead of needing to be upgraded.

The X1 has the 120m instead of the 9650mGT, which I've heard is a downgrade. (Is that true?)
I could just use some advice on which one to get, as its impossible to know "intangibles" like the mouse noise looking at a picture.

Differences as far as I can tell are: The 81 has a 1366x768 (16x9) screen as opposed to the 80's 1280x800 (16x10), which could be a plus.
The GT 120M should be slightly slower than the 9650M GT seeing as it's specs are more comparable to the 9600M GT, but in some benchmarks it actually appears to be ~5-10% faster. You might try http://www.notebookcheck.net/Comparison-of-Graphic-Cards.130.0.html if you want more detailed information.
As you noted, the 81 comes with a 32bit OS, which makes the 4gb of RAM sort of ineffective, seeing as it will only recognize 3.
I'm running the Windows 7 x64 release candidate which will work for about another year, by which time I expect to be able to lay my hands on a full version. If you have an x64 Vista install, or are want to use 7, that's no big deal.
On the other hand, a 32bit OS will have fewer compatibility issues, and thus far not too many programs really take advantage of 64bit OSes.
I wouldn't be overly concerned about mouse noise--you can always just tap the pad if it's that bad...
The N81 is a newer design, so you might view that as an advantage--it should be a smoother product.
Good luck--let me know which you get.
