Last year's W5 model; updated to the one you posted about in other thread. Very capable and portable machine for basic uses. Can undervolt it significantly to increase battery life.

Con: last year's model on Sonoma architecture; 12" screen may be small for her - she needs to see this size in person.

It is a slightly outdated model but it would be a good deal if you don't care about the latest and greatest, or just using it for e-mails and surfing the web or that kind of nature.

I've seen W5A's and I agree, the screen is a bit too small for the dimensions. The battery life is relatively short also, even with the 6-cell.

here is what is outdated: single core pentium M, the RAM is 400 MHz vs. 667 MHz featured in some notebooks today, 4200 rpm hard drive (even though the 100GB capacity is great), and only 512MB of RAM.

Another good option I thought of, rather than the old W5 would be the brand new Z35f, Asus' whitebox option for 13.3 screen. The dimensions are similar to the w7, and you can spec out a good system with the CDuo processor at a reseller like BTOtech.com for $1260.

For a great comparison of the W5 to W7 in pictures and his comments on the two systems, see this post from CharlieDigital http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=72149 and link to his blog for the pix.

Seem to a good deal if comparing with Core Duo. If you would like to choose a Core Duo, W5F also has a 12.1" wide screen and built-in webcam, but it is a little expensive.
