I've been searching all day, and can't find a solution to my problem. My son did the free update on his X551M from 8.1 to 10.He thought it upgraded, but it didn't.He kept using it, and now it slow and quits responding soon after booting.I can't reset the computer back to factory.Fast boot and secure boot are both disabled. When I run the reset tool,I get an error saying there's a problem with the hard disk, and ask me to run the repair tool, which I do.Then I try to restore it again and get another error.

Now I can't even get the computer to boot up.I just get a screen saying there was an error and windows couldn't load.

All of my Acers can boot straight into restoring the computer to factory settings by pressing alt + F10.There's no menus to deal with, just straight to resetting to original, as new configuration, and deleting everything else that's on the drive. Is this possible with an Asus?If so,what keys?F9 takes me to the recovery options and F2 takes me to bios.Nothing I tried does anything else. Also,my son didn't make a recovery disc.

The Windows recovery tool options? I thought F9 was the hotkey Asus designated for their recovery software.

What about Safe Mode; are you able to boot to that?

None of that was available. The partition was damaged or deleted.I was finally able to do a clean install of 10.I set the boot options to allow for booting into the flash drive. When I restart the computer, by holding the power button down,it would reset the BIOS, and stop the computer from booting into my USB flash drive.I eventually discovered, on the save and exit page, that I could select an option that rebooted the computer directly into the flash drive without touching the power button.

Ah, that's unfortunate that it came to that. Still, glad you have a desktop to boot into again. If that recovery partition is gone, you can still create your own recovery image via Windows. Whether you save it to a partition, a USB flash drive, a disc, etc., you can use it in the future to avoid another format + reload. Just food for thought.

    Thanks for following up!

I have the Win 10 USB drive I made on my other laptop, and a recovery USB drive.I think I am covered if my son finds a way to kill 10 again.
