    Hey Guys,

I just recieved my ASUS G1S from GentechPC (got in 6 days shipped to an Army APO addy in Iraq...pretty impressive..and great service by these guys BTW). I had a 160GB 7200 rpm hard drive installed. Now my computer says my space on it is 149 GB which I assume is because of Windows, and thats cool. But when I recieved it, I only had around 110 GB available. Is this because of some recovery partiton or something? Also, is there anyway to get rid of it to free up that space? And one last question, how can I configure my HD with a few more partitions? Right now I only have one, and I'd like to make one or two seperate ones for music or movies and whatnot.

    Thanks!

Smart guy, if the first thing you are worried about is partition after receiving your comp. Thats the first thing i did as well on my G2S. My 160 gb says same 149GB.
I have tried tried tried and TRIED no luck with windows built in Disk administration. If you have vista you are gona run into trouble. Try it anyway i doubt it that this will work. Right click on my computer. Manage and then disk management on far left bottom. Microsoft claims that this will take care of all the partitioning needs that one has. In reality vista due to its aggressive page file system will not allow you to do the partitioning EXCEPT a certain amount such as 20 gb only.
I had to buy Paragon Partition Manager to do it. Even the X Partition Magic is not working with vista. Here is the link to the software.
    http://www.partition-manager.com/

There is another utility in command prompt called DSKPART with bunch of different switches. I tried that as well but of no use.

I tried that last night and couldn't get it to work. I pretty much have an identical set up to you aside from the G2s and the turbo memory.

You're never going to actually see 160GB. It's the way it's calculated by the PC. For example my 200GB HDD has a capacity of a 186GB.

Right, also an example is my 750GB drive that shows as 698GB.

As for only having 110GB free, that is something I want to figure out on my G1S. 30GB for a factory loaded OS is absolutely ridiculous, even for RedHat!

Yeah...I know that you will never get the full size of your hard drive...that's a given, but it says i have 149 gigs total so I assume that the 11 missing gigs is for Vista...what I wanna know is why did it say I only had like 120 gigs or so available when I got the laptop....where did the other 29 odd gigs disappear to

Well the full capacity is the 149 gigs. Its because the 160 gigs is decimal capacity where 1 gb = 1,000,000,000 bytes. Your computer calculates it using binary and 1gb = 1,073,741,824 bytes and you get 160 = 149.01, 250 = 232.83, 750 = 698.47 and so on. So its not really missing 11 gb its just its calculated differently. I found this on the faqs at western digital btw.

And yeah there is a recovery partition on the drive that came with the notebook.

Tangerined, we are aware that the calculations of gigs lead some to beleive hard drives should show up as more than they do in Windows.

Our question is something else. When I run the Asus recovery CD, and choose the options to install to one large partition, I understand that 160GB drives will only show as 144. Why is there only about 110GB free out of 144? What could possibly be using 30GB right after a fresh re-partition and re-image. There is no un-partitioned space. I don't know how much room Vista needs, but 30GB cannot be right. Leads me to believe Asus has tacked on a ridiculous amount of crap. I know they have a lot of bloat ware, but in add/remove programs none of it takes up much room at all to even come remotely close to explaining the 30GB of used space.

Asus, why? I have much more important things to put on my hard drive. It's like the big green weenie.

    Read more on VISTA.
Reboot the system couple of times and check your Free space. You will be surprised how often vista shows you different numbers on the free space.

Vista on average takes 12-15 GB. Or upto 20 I'm not sure about. Quite obiviously the 15/20 GB would be Vista Ultimate. Then there might be a shadow copy of the OS, or the media centre files.

There is a hide partition of 7 gigas. I's a recovery partition with the same data of the recovery DVD you received. So you have to see 149-7=142 GB. No reason for the others gigas lost.

Yes, I see the hidden partition, but there is still only 110 free out of 144. It's been about a week, reboots do not free up that much disk space.

I wanted to buy the Asus G1S notebook . As far as i know the OS is placed in a seperate partition in the Hard disk and not with a seperate OS disc .
    Is this true? .

I wanted to upgrade the hard disk by placing Seagate Momentus 7200.2 160GB hard disk instead of the existing 5400rpm hard disk . If i upgrade then the Original OS would be of no use if it is in a separate partition in the hard disk .

People who bought this laptop pls help

Dude, how many threads did you spam with the same question??
I understand that you want an answer but a mass spamming of G1S threads is not the way to do it.

The G1S comes with a recovery disc in addition to a recovery partition.

Heh.... I am just trying to figure out how to get rid of that partition and get those gigs of space back and make some more partitions.

I don't think the recovery partition does too much for me anyways because I am running Vista 64 because I upgraded to 4 gigs of ram.

I am motivated to get my own copy of windows... I hate manufacturers for the way they do things.
