Alright I just recently got my W3J and am very pleased with it but for some reason I can't connect to any wireless networks. It detects the networks and says it is connected, but when I try to run Internet Explorer I can't bring up any webpages. I've tried the repair option but that doesn't do anything. It says that it is sending packets but none are being recieved. I have tried on both a secured and unsecured network with the same results so it isn't a problem with the WEP key or any of that. Any help would be greatly appreciated. And yes, the wireless card is turned on.

What level is it showing it connected at...how many bars/speed? That's kinda weird...My V6V was doing that the other day, It was connected, had 2 bars, and showed packets received and sent, but couldn't pull up any pages. It turned out that the connection was just too weak. I moved to another room and eventually it loaded a page with the same connection status and strength. It hasn't happened since though. I was grabbing an unsecured signal from who knows where. I'm not too sure in your case though, sorry. What kinda wireless setup are you running? That might help others help you.

I'm getting at least 3 if not 4 bars most times. Like I said, it says it is connected to the network but I can't access anything online.

i have a 1-month old A6Ja and sort of have a network problem too. I always get a network connection (excellent signal), but for some reason it drops after 10-15 minutes. From there on, the network adapter is permanently disabled until the unit is rebooted. Ive tried updating the drivers & changing the settings but no luck.
If you cant solve the problem (like I do), send it over to Asus for servicing. My A6Ja has been there for the past 2 days, no positive feedback as of yet. Im afraid its a hardware problem. Hopefully its just a software glitch. -
try downloading fire fox and check IE to see the proxy settings are blank.
-
I'm going to grab some food but I'll be back with more ideas -
1) Haven't tried FireFox yet, I will download it once I can connect to a non-wireless network.
2) I've disabled then enabled the wireless card and it makes no difference.
3) Tried the ping command and it said it was unable to locate the host google or anything else for that matter.
4) I've also downloaded the latest Intel Pro Wireless drivers and it didn't change anything. Doesn't work if I let Windows manage the wireless either. The network connection status says it is sending out a lot of packets but recieving only 3 even though the signal strength is excellent and at 4 bars.
Thanks for the help so far, hopefully we can figure this out. -
Sounds like you are trying to connect to a secure network? Where are the networks and did you have access too them with a different computer?
I was having those problems w/ a PDA of mine...seemed to be foreign networks it would happen to...then again, maybe it was just flaky? -
hey jrob
that happened to me. i managed to solve it after trying to connect to a wired lan connection, and then trying a wireless connection afterwards.
it's almost like trying to bait it to work. try that. -
give windows a shot...i heard some ppl on this forum had the same problem and letting windows manage it fixed the problem...also try moving somewhere else (closer to the router).....u may be getting ure neighbor's signal!!!

JRob,
sorry nothing's helped so far. Hang in there though, we'll get it. Since it couldn't ping google, you're really not getting any connection at all. Is your wireless card at least detecting and registering an IP Address? You can check this by going back to the Command prompt (Start-->Run, Type "Command" and type "IP Config". If you're connecting through a router it should be a number like 192.168.0.X. You can also try releasing and renewing your IP address - I believe the command is ipconfig /renew - and maybe that will reset the connection settings for you.
I personally dont like letting windows manage the connection, because I find it drops the signal much more frequently. However, since you're having difficulty connecting as is, it couldn't hurt. Do you have any other computers that connect wirelessly and do they have any difficulty? Also, do you have access to your network to change the network name/ssid, etc?? When I get home later today I'll take a look at my setup and see if I can offer any other suggestions. -
It is a wireless network at school, there are both secured and unsecured ones here and I have tried connecting to both without any luck even though the signal strength says it is very strong. I've connected to the internet fine via my ethernet cable at home but I just can't seem to connect to any wireless networks.

You might want to hard reset your router and try again.

Here's a thread I found in another forum that's discussing the same issue, with various methods of resolving it - apparrently the issue requires different actions for different computers, so you may need to try a few of these. I'll keep searching and let you know if I get anything.
[EDIT: One thing I forgot to mention. Do you have any 2.4 GHz cordless phones near your laptop? Sometimes they can interfere with your signal enough to block proper transmission. Also, you can try to reset the "winsock" windows internet software; Try typing this at the command prompt - netsh winsock reset] Let me know if you have any success -
Im having a lot of trouble getting the w3j to connect to the school's wireless internet myself. At home and/or connecting to a wifi router that has WEP encryption the w3j can connect flawlessly. However, connecting to my school's wifi w/ a TKIP or WEP encryption and LEAP authentication, Intel Proset keeps trying to connect and eventually just hangs/freezes. It's kinda weird but I still can't manage to get the software to not-hang. Anyone know if there's an older version of Intel Proset I can download somewhere? I know the older version worked (before the newly designed GUI of ver 10.1.1.3) because I can connect to the school's wifi easily on my w2v.
edit: i did update the drivers for the card too. -
t have access to the router since it is a school network but I don't think that is the source of the problem anyway. -
Have you tried more than one network? or just at home? But if it says connected that makes no sence. if you have another pc on the network what you should do is share the hard drive. now connect your laptop to that network and try to map to the harddrive. even if you can share a printer that will work. If you can map to a hard drive or a printer than its some other setting and your network card if working fine.

can you ping anything on the network?

Jrob,
What about disabling temproarilly the security feature on the wireless card? As someone else mentioned, they can connect to a secure access point, but maybe not one without the security? It's worth a shot in my opinion. If you disable it and then it works, then your problem is related to the security settings and perhaps they can be modified -
yes! finally someone who can relate. I've been having the same type of troubles with my w3j as well.
i have a 2wire 1000sw and netgear rounter with sbc global dsl. I can't connect through the wireless at home but can connect through everything else including my neighbors network which pisses me off.
But i've even went as far as going into internet protocol and forcing the ip address to the one that is assigned to me when i use an ethernet cable. i think the problem is with the software of the unit. internet works fine with a cable at home. To be more specific the ip address wont match with the one thats on the rounter. More importantly when i force the ip address they wont connect properly and it saids that the rounter is out of range even when the labtop is just right next to it. i keep thinking that it's just the way i set it up in the beginning but since other people are having the same problem i feel better. Lets all work together to trouble shoot this sucker. -
Could very well be the damn software. Too bad Windows' zero point utility doesn't have all the necessary options to allow connecting to routers/aps that utilize some sort of cisco encryption or authentication.
-
can you tell me what software you got installed?
-
If you use aol or bt broadband you will need to program the username and password into your wireless router.
It sounds like this may be the problem because you are connected to the network but are not accessing the internet. -
-
Well you start off by going to the ip of your router in your internet browser. For netgear the deafult ip is http://192.168.0.1 (i think) A menu should appear and have options to enter details such as username and options. I can't really help you because I am on telewest and use a Belkin router but if you ring BT and ask them I'm sure they will assist you as in my past experience their helplines are very good.
