Hello all I need some immediate identification and troubleshooting help.
1. The most important.....I just acquired a Asus Z96F/S96F The cpu I want to put in is a T7200 Core 2 duo however the model number is SL9SF which shows a pin package type of s478...I suppose I am going to need a S479 cpu? I notice two variations of this processor
s478 pin micro package sl9sf
s479 ball micro package sl9sl
2. I have a ODD panasonic UJDA770 which by asimobile chart for the S96F shows that is is compatible my question is the drive I have doesnt have any holes on it for screws? do I require some sort of caddy or rails? I bought the drive second hand and the barebones chassis did come with anything
If you could please help it would be appreciated!
Shaun

The Core Duo/Core 2 Duo processors use a somehwat confusing socket type. They are both pin compatible, and both have a pin count of 478. The socket it uses is called the 479 socket, or Socket M. The processor you need has to be Socket 479/M and must be a pin type.
-
So the processor I have intel SL9SF will not work is what your saying?
Shaun -
The processor should work. Intel classes the process with 478 pins, and it is given as an option in the Z96F and S96F. Have a look at the links below. They will explain some more details about the processor.

Hmm I can't seem to get it to fit. I don't want to force it and end up with bent pins....it fits fine on all 2 corners but in one corner is always raised. I double checked the cpu socket lock but its open and no problem. I dont know what to do?
Also any ideas on the ODD...whether I need a bracket or rails or something? -
Insert the processor uniformaly, and let it just slot into the socket. No force needs to be applied to the processor. Also, make sure the processor is in the right orientation, and just check if the pins on the base of the processor match that of the socket. Can you post any pictures?
-
Unfortunately I dont have pics available...I believe this is the incorrect cpu...I have ordered a s479 cpu for sure instead...this one must be s478. Now what should I do with the Optical disk drive? Do I need a mounting kit of somesort? The instructions dont say..I have a Mat****a...or Panasonic same thing UJDA770 it has front black bezel...am I required to have more?
-
Check the pin layout for the processor, and see if it matches the attached picture exactly. If it doesn't, then that is why it doesn't fit. I'm not too sure on the drive, but I don't think it requires any rails. Check and see if the size of the drive is the same, because you should be able to fit the dive in the slot.

Pin Count looks very similar but between that pic shown and mine the differences are:
1. mine has a 200 and not a 300 printed in the middle
2. That chip has a lot less stuff under the core then mine
Optical drive problem fixed...dug a little deeper in the box and found rails -
Well, if there are no pin locations that are different, then the processor should fit into the socket. If you have a Core 2 Duo T7200, then you can have no other than socket 479, so that means the problem is somehwere else. Don't worry baout naything printed on the processor, just main physical properties of the processor is what we are concerned with. The things on the underside of the processor are called transistors, and different processor will have different numbers.

I understand what your saying but if you go to Intel's site and look at the specs on mobile core 2 duo cpu's there are 2 variations of the T7200 a s478 and s479 but both listed as mobile. I'm guessing I have the s478 which is incompatible.
-
The T7200 was only built on one socket, and there is only one type. The Intel website may have it incorrect. I know that sounds wrong, but it may be the case. There is still some confusement over which socket is which, and for the sake or it, Intel may list the same processor twice, but with a different socket name, when in actual fact there is no technical difference between the two. Confusing, perhaps.
-
Yeah I'm not getting it...on their site there is like 2 or maybe 3 processors that are the same spec but they list as s478 and s479 all the same specs otherwise...its really making me angry...no bent pins and it says clearly on the mobo socket M

Zero can you help me out with instructions with updating the Bios for my
Z96F? I see Z96J etc etc but not for my model. I've downloaded the .rom bios but how do I update it now?
I have no OS on the machine yet it is all a blank slate....P.S. I am not sure why but the T7200 after placing it on the socket over and over again just finally popped in. The notebook boots up fine and recognizes the cpu as a T7200 but gives me an incorrect cpu ucode message... I need to update to the latest bios to cure this problem

The easiest way to update the BIOS is through Windows. That is the case for most people, and it works well. So long as the processor is working, then you should be able to install an OS, and begin from there. You should be able to download a BIOS, which will install itself from within Windows. When you want to install it, make sure the computer is connected to the AC adapter. The utility will do the rest.
-
So I should be able to install the OS without the bios update first? I see that when it displays the ucode error it says press f1 to continue I just dont have the OS installed yet so it doesnt continue
-
So long as the error can be bypassed, and the processor works correctly, I would suggest just installing an OS, and then sorting the BIOS update out. BIOS updating in Windows is easier, so long as you have a BIOS that can install itself in Windows.

Which utility should I use for the Bios upgrade in windows? The Asus Cd that came with my Z96F has Aflash on it. I notice people talking about Winflash but I am unsure of the exact instructions to follow to use it with my bios .rom file. Also where can I go to download Winflash utility? My Cd that came with my Z96F does not have winflash included..just Aflash and I can't run it in Dos because the drive is ntfs and wont recognize a dos boot Cd. I checked the bios and there is no built in flash option within the Bios either.

The Asus WinFlash utility can be found at the link below:

I don't think the utility can be used with your current AFlash BIOS. You will need to doenload a BIOS from the Asus support website, and that should be compatible wth the WinFlash utility. That way, the BIOS can flash from within Windows.
