One of the main reasons I bought this W2V last November was because I had hoped to use it to capture the video from my old camcorder over a composite connection. This laptop came with so many gadgets and gizmos it's taken me till now to really get down to doing it. Anyways, I cannot get any kind of video signal into the computer.

No matter what software I'm using, it says that it cannot enable the video capture module or something to that effect. I've tried Nero 7. I've tried Ulead VideoStudio. I've tried Cyberlink PowerDirector. I've finally come to the conclusion that either I'm an idiot and I'm doing something really wrong or missing something, or my W2V is defective.

If anybody has gotten their W2V to capture video though a composite connection via the 1/8 jack dongle that came with the notebook.... PLEASE help me out here.

I've emailed ASUS but they have not responded yet. I see that there are much more people here and more knowledgable here than on the ASUS site forums so I'm really hoping that somebody here will be able to assist me.

Thanks in advance for any information you guys can provide.

I used the A/V inputs and Sony Vegas 5 to transfer my VHS stuff to the W2V then created DVDs of them all. Are you configuring the video capture in the capture options correctly?

Is your W2V the north american version with MCE? I spoke to ASUS tech support a while back and was told that windows media center does not support this feature well (cryptic instructions included below) and they recommended i switch to XP professional and use ASUS mobile theater. This is a little frustrating as capturing video was one of the requirements of my laptop.
The setting MCE about AV-in function is little complex. There are many steps you may ask customer to follow:
    >
    > Settings => TV => Configure Signal TV => Yes => Next => Yes => TV cable => NTSC => Yes => Next => Modify => 2 => OK => Toshib => C0000 => First selection => Give a number =>Next =>No => Fine
    >
    > Then you can go to "Television" section under main menu and switch to the number that you set before.
    >
    > Further, Windows XP MCE2005 have issue by using device such as DVD Player, VCR.
    > Because Windows MCE 2005 has MPEG-2 Decorder compatibility issue.
    > You can suggest customer to download tool of Microsoft for determine.

I ended up returning my laptop. Good luck!

Thanks for the info. I now want to return my laptop but I guess it's a lil too late for that. I guess my only option is to fork out some more dough to Microsoft in order to buy another copy of XP Pro? This really sucks. If the features of the notebook do not work with MCE then why do they ship it with that? Now I'm going to be stuck with a MCE lisence that I'm never going to use and I have to shell out more money for anotgher OS.

I'm really amazed that ASUS would do something like that. I'm really upset now. Has anybody with a MCE gotten some kind of video capture to work with the W2V

    Thanks for the info StephenB.

illucid - That's the problem... nothing will let me configure the video capture at all. It's just not there. I don't understand how ASUS could do that. Thanks for you help though.

Now I've managed to get XP Pro into the W2V. Can anybody tell me where to get ASUS Mobile Theater? I can't seem to find it on the ASUS site.

What I would really like to to capture video using Ulead VideoStudio or Cyberlink PowerDirector but neither one will work even with XP Pro installed.

In PowerDirector, I don't get any choices for input except audio from the sound card.

In Video Studio, the only option I get for video input is 713x BCA Anaglog Capture which does not contain any video. This option was also available in MCE. Also shouldn't there be a 713x BCA Digital Capture?

I'm hoping that I'm missing somethig stupid and it's an easy fix. Any further help of information would be appreciated.

    Thanks.

I was able to capture video after installing XP Pro using 'studio' by Pinnacle in the regular way: capture, select input, set options, start capture. I did have to hook up audio seperatly to audio in plug rather than as part of the rca/vidio in.

I do remember visiting websites to track down drivers or software for the capture card but do not recall whether i found any or not. The card in the North American W2 was not available for commercial purchase and therefore not supported by the manufacturer. Asus should of course have the drivers on their website but i'm sure you have already checked this...

With my W2 asus theatre disk was included along with all the other extras in the box.

I too was looking forward to the video-in feature, it was to be my multimedia center but I cant get it to work.

These instructions helped a little, but they go a little more like this on mine:
I found that MCE can recognize the AV-IN but before it gets to this step where it scans ( Red) for the available video it asks if I have a set top box (which I obviously dont); if I choose no it will just end the config right there, but when I choose yes it shows the video in preview but when I go to OK it MCE gives me that error.
And I DO have an IR controller connected.....because ASUS found out the PCMIA remote wouldnt work with MCE so we had to get more bulky attatchments.

Is there a standalone program that can do this? I remember my old desktop had a program from ATI that did the video in but I just want this feature to work!
