I recently received my G72GX-RBBX09, and apparently, from what I have found searching the net, the Turbo Gear overclocking program was locked for Asus computers that have quad processors. So, I need to use setfsb unless I can update the BIOS (completely inexperienced with this sort of thing), but I have no idea how to use this program. How do I use this to overclock to 2.3 ghz on this processor and computer? This was the speed I was aiming for.

First you need the PLL code, find it inside the laptop or ask somebody else that knows it.

From there the program is easy to use, just "get fsb" and then slowly raise the bar a bit and "set fsb" it will show you the new cpu speed in the bottom right side of the program, repeate small steps of fsb rasing and setting until you get the speed you want.

As for how you figure it out the manual way, you take the fsb readout it gives you, and multiply it by your cpu multiplier.

Chances are you dont know it, so use a program like cpu-z to find it. cpu-z can also tell you your current fsb speed.

Keep in mind your RAM gets overclocked too when you up your fsb. Depending on how asus set the ram fsb divider you may find yourself with dissapointing overclocks as th ram can give out well before your cpu does.

Thanks for the responses. I'm going to try it now. I have another issue, though. I overclocked the GTX 260m up to the stock speeds since it comes underclocked from the factory, but it keeps reverting back to the factory defaults even when I have a profile loaded. Why is this, and can I make it stop?

last time i tried to flash my ram it was write protected, i was using a different program though something like spdflash I forget what it was called but should have the same effect.

I think my W90 is held back by ram speed. 2.0ghz into 2.7ghz but the cpu should do 3.0ghz pretty easy.

I can't seem to find the right PLL. And the gpu keeps resetting to factory defaults. :(

I think you mean SPDtool ;)

Yes most of my ram has WP enabled also. But I have two sticks that dont.
I guess you have to be lucky to find ram without WP.

Although you could try to ground the WP pin on the EEPROM to disable WP.
I tried it but my notebook wouldn't boot with the mod.
Probably needed to be hot plugged then flashed and then have the mod removed to let it boot.

You might have to take the notebook apart to find the PLL. Make sure you dont void your warranty though.

I dont know what to do about your GPU

I went to the link you had posted, and it mentions checking Read-Back support under the clock generator section. Mine says yes, which apparently means I should be able to find the PLL. How do I find it? I can't seem to find any instructions on this program.

Try going into the options and see what you get.
The program isn't the best, never worked for me.

The options menu just shows a bunch of filters basically, detect this, ignore that, enable those. It's weird, I see all kinds of people saying the program can detect PLL's, but nobody mentions how. The site doesn't mention anything helpful in the FAQ either.

uncheck the "ignore unknown clock generator".

I did. And this enabled me to see the read back support thing in the clock generator section, which does say yes. No idea how to actually search for it, though. There's no "find PLL" option.

I just got the same laptop as you yesterday. I can't figure out how to access the Nvidia controls on this. I'm normally a ATI guy.

I just ordered one today. How do you guys like yours? I can't wait to get mine.

As for the GPU, Asus intentionally downclocked it because of heating issues. I guess their cases are the best for heat dispersion and that, combined with the quad core processor, means the the system would probably be too hot at stock speed. (which sucks, but what are you gonna do?)

Yeah, but "overclocked" to stock settings it barely increases in temperature at all. I like it a lot. The screen is pretty nice, has good resolution, the design isn't flashy and retarded, it's fast, the keyboard is backlit and nice ("chiclet" and soft...doesn't make much noise) and I haven't run into any other hitches other than the fact I haven't been able to overclock the cpu as of yet. I wish they hadn't locked turbogear for their quad core versions. :( Overall, I'd give it a 9 out of 10, though.

You mean to overclock and whatnot? Download Nvidia system tools from their website.

Btw, I have a question regarding Setfsb. What should I choose for the Current CPU Frequency: Internal setting? There's QPC, MMT, and SLP. I have no idea what these are, or what I should select.

It's in Device Settings under the Performance tab. There should be clock speeds and such in that.

I found it. However, when I put it at stock speeds even, in about 5 minutes of Furmark it shuts off because it is just getting too hot. Are you running into this problem? Will I run into this problem during games if I OC ~10%, because they aren't as GPU centered as Furmark?

Sorry I'm late to respond. I have not run into this heating issue. Mine is only in the 70's while gaming, I haven't tried Furmark yet. I'm actually downloading both it and 3dmark06 right now. I'm going to see what I get in these. Do you know what good scores are in these programs? Oh, and I'm going to try Vantage.

I only got about 9.8k in 3dmark06...why is that so much lower than people with the rbbx05? Maybe it doesn't do well with quads? Also, can't do Vantage -_- the min resolution is too big.

The max res of the laptop...1600X900 and the drivers not sure...but I think they're the newest out.

they are running their test at either 1280x1024 or 1280x768, so you will get lower scores by running at a higher resolution. you need to find another monitor to test on if you want to compare scores.

Alright...I overclocked my Q9000 to 2.3 ghz and got about 11,500 in 3dmark06. Is that program pretty CPU oriented? I'm assuming it's based on clock speed more and not optimized for quads, as well.

It is optimized for quads. And yes, it is a bit /too/ CPU oriented.

Hm...then why did I score so much lower than others using mid-level dual core processors? The resolution is permanently set to 1280X768 since I only have the free version, so that's not it. I also overclocked to 2.35 ghz.
