Hey everybody, I have read on multiple forums that a ddr2 based hd2600 like mine cannot benefit at all from having more than 256mb ram (and if it was any worse I'd be quite shocked :) ). Mine is configured when I check in the configuration under the ati drivers that it is using 512mb. Is there any way to drop it down to 256mb? I have checked the bios and the option is not available!

You cannot alter the video card.

They are saying that because it has limited memory bandwidth that it cannot take advantage of much more than 256MB vram. The extra memory doesn't negatively effect performance.

Well, actually it doesn't negatively affect the performance of the card but having that extra ram would be great cause I'm kind of a serial installer :). I have also checke the registry and I do see that the amount of ram is listed there in hex but when I change it, it stays at 512 on ati's configuration. There must be a trick to getting this right. I already found a way around listening to the fan going on and off every 15 seconds, sure I can get this done too!!

you can NOT simply disable the ram on your graphics card. the ram is recognized when your laptop starts up, and there is no way to alter that. at least not on software level.

and btw it does not make any sense to disable or lower the amount of ram on your graphics card.

    reread willy´s post.

Firstly schoko relax, it seems like you might have a heart attack dude ;). And secondly I have an hd2600 that utilises hypermemory (here is the link if you do not know what hypermemory is http://ati.amd.com/technology/hypermemory.html ) so what I am trying to do is basically stop the hypermemory ie standard system memory useage. And yes I have read Willy's post, I always appreciate input from people and don't just glance over and ignore it.

i do know what hypermemory is !!!

i am relaxed, but if you are talking about hypermemory you should say so from the beginning. ;)

your card has 512mb dedicated ddr II ram ? does it ?

if you are talking about hypermemory, you know per definition that it is ram from the motherboard that is used as graphics ram. that one you can switch off, but you cannot switch of dedicated ram.

so your card has 512 mb + hypermemory ...

there is a setting in the registry to turn off the hypermemory, just google it or search here in the lenovo forum. i posted the registry switch a while ago.
