Looks nice... but flimsy, they are able to flex the cover quite a lot. Maybe a few cracked screens in the future. I like the keyboard, it looks like they got a numpad into a 15" notebook, or is that 17"?

I love new lid design - plastic strip at the top is finally gone ( hopefully it doesn't mess up Wi-Fi signal ), but I'm still disappointed with the fact that there is still a lot of flex on the lid.
Love new hinge design. Don't like new keyboard look and the fact that there are still those annoying LED-s for Caps, Wi-Fi, Power below the TouchPad. I don't understand why they didn't incorporate those LED-s in the keyboard just like on Zenbooks. Also, gone is VGA port - finally, and replaced with Mini DisplayPort which is great!

    All in all nice upgrade!

I for one, still want a VGA port as the projectors in my daily use still use it.

Awesome, been waiting for a N56 successor with touch and Haswell.
Still running on a Core2Duo and looking forward to the reviews!

One of the comments says it is a pre-production model without touchscreen. I would guess that the release model will have a touchscreen with a solid non-flex screen as do current high end models.

I would love to know a bit more on pricing and throttling.
If it is as expensive as a Mac and throttles like a Mac then I'm not interested.
I also don't need such a High Res screen so this might be a no-go for me for that reason as well.

I did a quick google search and found the singapore hardware forum that was mentioned earlier. One of the ASUS distributors is estimating stock to arrive in mid-July. I am running an old duo-core Dell XPS-15 and the Asus N550 is at the top of my list as the replacement. With all the other manufacturer releasing press about new Haswell laptops I am suprised that ASUS has been quiet. Lets hope for new news soon.

This laptop is currently listed on Saveonlaptops which is an ASUS certified retailer.

    ASUS N550JV-CM067H

This version only has a Full HD screen and is priced at £1132.40 which is quite reasonable if you consider it is the only touchscreen laptop with such good graphics, a blu-ray drive, and IPS screen and great sound...When I looked on other websites, it seemed to be priced slightly cheaper and we can also expect Asus to release cheaper models like last year

Let's not kid ourselves that Apple is the laptop innovator. Switching to Intel chips, FreeBSD for the OS, no touchscreen...

I'm showing interest in the N550 in spite of the design a bit, would prefer the traditional all black styling among Windows laptops. So will weigh the N550 with Lenovo's offerings.

I would hope this information from Fry's is a typo. At this price point the LCD resolution should be Full HD. They killed a great configuration with a sub-par display,

Take a look of what I found today! In the other videos in the channel you can see how the N750 can do in gaming (not so well...). Since it has the same Graphics Card than the N550 its a good reference. A full written review is said to come in the next days though, so stay alert! I love the design of this laptop and the battery life, but the matte display and the awesome performance of the GT750M SLI on Lenovo's Y510p has me thinking a lot of which one to get this summer... Well let me know what you think of the video, and if you contribute with your thoughs to my laptop crusade I'll aprecciate it!

@Hotblood @simondva Thanks guys for the latest new ! very interesting !
I'm a bit disapointed about the lower sound quality (worse than N56/N76) and the overheating when playing games...
I hope it is just a problem with those test model, and that it will be fixed in the future models !

@Hotblood The 3D accessory you are talking about is the Leap motion (you can see more here : https://www.leapmotion.com/), it's not a specific accessory for asus N serie.

Sounds like the sound modifications were made to improve heating. Asus claims the sound is improved as well so this may be a subjective difference with the reviewer. However, do you expect to make much use of the laptop audio? :) I may use it for videoconferencing or watching news/highlight clips but I use fancy headphones for music/movies. I hope the subwoofer thing doesn't add too much to the cost; don't really care for it.

The leap motion thing looks cool! They should call the product itself the minority report thinggy.

Another question is the graphics card: would the 2GB and 4GB versions of the GT 750M perform noticeably different, or is it primarily a marketing gimmick?

Hey everyone, those videos posted above with the N550 are mine. If you have any questions, let me know.

From what I was told, there will be a non-glare NON-IPS panel on the N550 (on the cheaper versions). I'd reckon it's the TFT Asus used on the G55/N56 , knowing how the TFT on the N750 is the one they used on the G75.

I don't know anything about a non-glare IPS screen... that would be interesting...

My one concern with it being so thin and light is throttlling.
The N56 throttled quite a bit and I know I wouldn't buy the N550 if it did the same.
Can you test this and let us know?
    Thanks

I did. Well, I didn't run a stress test on this N550, it's a test lease and I'm not really allowed to push it. Still, I did record some HWInfo logs while running PCMark Vantage and while playing Skyrim for about 4 hours, in 1080p with Medium details. There's no trace of throttling.

    You'll find details here: Asus N550 / N550JV review - a sleek multimedia notebook

ON the same site you'll find my review for the N750, with a similar platform. In that case, the same piece of Software showed throttling while performing the same tasks. I did run a stress test in that unit, SUper Pi + Furmark and you'll see in that post that the CPU's frequency dropped when temperatures reached very high levels, but not by a lot, it dropped to about 2.7 GHz, which is still Northwards of the 2.4 Ghz default frequency. So I'd reckon there were some errors with that unit or the software was reading skewed temperatures or something. Unfortunately such things happen with these test pre-release samples.

Once again, keep in mind these laptops I've tested are not the final production units, so treat the results accordingly...

Now to find one for the right price and matte screen :D

    EDIT:

After seeing the size of the mSata slot, I'm no longer interested in the Asus N550.
I wanted to have a 256GB with a large HDD and a DVD drive.
So far MSI does that and more so I'll be aiming for that.

Because 1080p is too much for a 15 inch screen, and games will run better with lower resolution

I think the opposite, no reason for such high resolution for such a small screen, in fact, the only reason why they put such resolution is for marketing

By the way. By the hell does Asus always put the "slow" memory version of the Gpu?

What is the i7 reference ? it may be a dual core (low comsumption version ?)
What is the memory reference ? 1066 Mhz / 1333 / 1600 ?, one memory may be glued to the motherboard and not replacable
    And the GPU of course

But this one is way thinner, for sure !

    You're talking about GDDR3 vs GDDR5 ?
Anyway, it seem GPU have 4 Gb of GDDR3

Yes, but not just it, also the the bus width, for example in the N55 series they used the worst version of the 555m, the 128 bit DDR3 version

I've got to test both of them.

    Asus V551LB

    - dual-core low-voltage i7 (U line)
    - up to 8 GB of RAM, soldered from what i can tell
    - slower graphics - 740M vs 750M
    - cache SSD
    - only 1366 x 768 px screen, with TFT panel
    - only 2 speakers and no external subwoofer

    N550
    - quad-core full voltage i7
    - up to 16 GB of RAM, upgradeable, 2 modules
    - no cache SSD
    - faster graphics
    - option for an IPS full-hd touchscreen
    - 4 speakers + subwoofer
    - thicker (about 6-7 mm or so) and slightly heavier (less than a pound)

Just got the Q550LF-BBI7T07 from bestbuy.
Asus 15.6" TouchScreen Laptop 8GB Memory 1TB Hard Drive Q550LF-BBI7T07 - Best Buy
Apparently they have almost the same specs, aside from the 745m that the q550 has. To be honest I really dont know what the differences are...
Talked to bestbuy employees about the n550, both of them that they are going to carry; they have the same specs listed online, yet have a price difference of almost 100 dollars. They said they were going to look at the specs in person once they get it in store, which they also said is coming soon. They were supposed to have it in-store today, but they never had any in-transit to begin with.

Just got the q550 from BestBuy
Asus 15.6" TouchScreen Laptop 8GB Memory 1TB Hard Drive Q550LF-BBI7T07 - Best Buy
Aside from the dual core i7, the lower 745m, and the 1920x1080 resolution that the q550 have, there are really no differences from the two n550's that bestbuy are showing on their website.
Speaking of, the the two n550s show the same specs, but are different in price; bestbuy employees say that they are going to look over it in-person once the two laptops arrive, which should be very soon, considering that they were supposed to have it in-store today.

Well for the HDD you have a 2.5" bay and 2xmSATA which can be raided, so it's just flexible.

When you pick any of the msata options on Xotic it replaces the 2.5 HDD, just in case anyone was confused...
