Since this is an OEM windows 8 machine, can you do a clean install without purchasing any upgrades? I just purchased an SSD and I'd like to create discs so I can just clean install win 8 to the ssd without worrying about cloning the existing 1tb 5400 rpm hdd. Is this possible? Has anyone gone this route?

    Germany, France, Holland.

From what your press say, in Italy N550 will "probabilmente saranno sul mercato tra settembre e dicembre 2013".

For those of you who are on the fence about this machine, here's a price that will make it a little easier:

    *$897 after $100 Instant Savings* ASUS N550JA-SB71T Touch 15.6" Laptop Computer, Intel Core i7-4700MQ, 8GB Memory, 1TB Hard Drive - Sam's Club

I'm slightly kicking myself because I just bought it yesterday on Amazon. Remember, though, that there is a 10% surcharge for non-members, but membership is only $45 so membership and tax (assuming around $50) will net you this laptop for under $1000.00.

For those interested in the Sam's club model....it does not come with dedicated graphics.

Thanks for posting that. That makes my choice easy. I cannot justify paying double for the zenbook infinity when this has more powerful components and way better serviceability and room for 2 real 2.5" drives plus i actually prefer 15.6" screens over 13.3"

Oh no dedicated GPU I knew it was too good to be true, nevermind.

How easy is converting the optical disk drive to hold a HDD? Where can I find the cheapest HDD caddy to convert the optical drive?

Yikes! I didn't read the model closely enough! Thanks for looking out. Many apologies! I thought it was the same as my amazon model.

Now for my shameless amazon plug : if you live in a no sales tax state the n550 with dedicated gpu is going for 1069 on amazon.

I don't have experience with a specific caddy, but earlier posters have confirmed this laptop to have a 9.5mm optical bay.

Also, a poster mentioned yesterday in the other N550 thread that he was able to get Adorama to price match the $999.99 price at BJ's. (BJ's has a membership cost of $50 if you buy directly.)

    Hi,

Before buying this laptop i'm wondering if it would be possible to turn the laptop on when the lid is closed.

I will mainly use this computer together with an external monitor and keyboard, the computer will then be stored under the table.

The options i think might solve my issue is
    1. Use an external keyboard and wake it up when i press a key
    2. Have an external switch for AC. When i turn it on, the computer could then recognize this as a power outage and turn it self on when the AC is back again. I know that in some BIOS there is an option to configure it like this. Does this machine have this?
    3. Wake on Lan (i don't find this user friendly...)

If there is anyone that has tested this, please share the information.

    Regards
    Mattias

I did wake the N550JV from sleep with (external) mouse activity, i will test if this holds true with the lid closed. Will report back later today.

    [Later Edit]

Just did a quick test and it does behave as predicted: mouse activity while the lid is closed will awake the system from sleep. Keyboard should do the same.

For anyone concerned with accidentally waking their laptop, this only happens if the system is set not to go to sleep while the lid is closed.

    Thanks,
Do you know if there is any setting in the Bios that will turn on the computer after a power outage.
A setting so that when the computer is turned off and you plug out the ac adapter and pull it back in again it should go on?
    Regards

No such options exposed in BIOS, but then again, power outage on a laptop?

Even on unlocked bios files I have used this option is not there, I think notebook manufacturers just don't bother entirely.

Spyder4Pro on mine says 60% NTSC / 77% sRGB when calibrated at 50% brightness.

I've developed several hundred photos on it in Lightroom 5 in the couple weeks I've had it. I haven't noticed any problems with not having 100% sRGB coverage, although this is for personal use and not color critical. To my eyes, photos look great on it. If there's a difference between this and the external 100% sRGB IPS monitor I have, I'd have to put them side by side to find it. Not feeling like I'm settling for less by switching my photo editing to this machine.

They look equivalent. It's just family snapshots though. And my external IPS isn't anything special, it's a 23" HP that I bought over a year ago for $200. If you had a nicer monitor, and compared the two with some color test chart intended to demonstrate gamut, contrast, and shadow detail, then a difference could probably be seen.

Take the battery out, make sure the ac is plugged in and try to run it. If not much happens it is DOA and return it.

I just purchased a N550 along with a Samsung 840 Pro SSD. I pulled out the 750GB that came with in and installed the SSD. I then tried booting to a Windows 7 install DVD (as I can't stand windows 8) to install a clean Win 7 onto the SSD. It hangs 10 seconds in at the 'Windows Starting...' screen everytime. I've tried turning almost everything off in the BIOS, but still no luck. Any ideas? I have tried another Win 7 disc as well and same thing.

Well, non-touchscreen is matte and touchscreen is glossy. They are both great IPS screens. For games: you may want to consider the one that had dedicated graphic card.

sorry for waking an old thread but I just purchased this laptop for photo editing and will need to use it until I can get a proper external monitor to do critical work on. So you figure that the matte non touch version should be able to pull off consistant and accurate color with editing? please I am very interested in your experience with this model as you have now owned it for quite a while, if you even still own it lol.

Yes, it's been great for photo editing. Again, I'm not doing anything critical, but the screen brightness and viewing angle have made it possible for me to do all my editing on the laptop now.
